so I am working on a zombie machinima and I am trying to make an illusion of a city (unfortuntaly a lot of the first episode or pilot is on Forgeworld) so I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to make a series of streets and allyways look realistic in forgeworld.
If you're making a small set, you should be able to commit a lot of resources to small details. Things like streetlights, sidewalks, and billboards will make this look more realistic. if you can. try adding things such as parked cars, dumpsters, etc. Shoe's Embarcadero is an excellent example of urban aesthetics, however, with a small set the amount of resources committed to detail would be far greater than those on Embarcadero and you would be able to make a very detailed city.
Sorry to toot my own horn, but I have a few maps with urban aesthetics that you're welcome to borrow ideas from. Skyrise, Wraith City, Remembrance. The sidewalk effect is a pretty good staple for city maps. I also really enjoy using brace larges to make highrise buildings. Hope this helps. Edit: My bad. I just thought it would be easier to show him that way than to explain everything.
Just because he's asking for tips doesn't mean you can link any of your creations. Instead, simply give him the name and he can do the searching himself. That's all besides the fact that he was looking for tips, not maps that had the qualities he was looking for. I've edited out all of the links above.
this is a nice tutorial video that could help. it shows quite a few urban details that you can add to your map. "Urban Setting" [HD] - Forge Tips & Tricks (THFE) - YouTube
I'm really good with aesthetics and urban/cities, so if you really need it, I'd love to help! As for roads, Upside Down Stunt Ramps are the most common, and in my opinion, realistic peice for roads.
There's something I've noticed about Uncaged. The little ramp that leads up to the covered man cannon area (down the bottom, opposite the tower) has something that looks fairly similar to a road with broken yellow lines. Don't know which Forge piece is used there (likely some kind of ramp ), and I can't get on my Xbox at the moment to take a screenie for you, but with some investigation of the map, I'm sure you'll easily find what I'm talking about. If you can't though, let me know here and I'll grab a picture for the next time I'm on.
Xun, that piece is an upside down Pyramid piece from buildings. It looks great, but it has the top overhang, has to be angled, and is expensive. If you have a situation where you could use those, that would work nicely but it won't be easy.
