Girls Playing Videogames? Not sure how legit this is but it came to my attention after a couple people told me a lot of girls like Minecraft. I was completely surprised because all the girls I know don't even know what it is. So I started looking on the interwebs and found this: link And found these comments to be interesting: Is this true? I need verification from a 90% male-dominated forum. Not biased AT ALL.
Well they didn't discuss what kinds of games women were playing. These days, a smart phone constitutes as a hand held gaming device. And games like angry birds and farmville are far more gender neutral than traditional core games like Halo. So my guess is that's where a lot of the female gaming population comes from: the casual market. That being said, I don't think that women over 18 play more games than men under 17. That's the game markets key demographic. The numbers have to be off.
i dont think the term "gamer" was properly defined in this survey. i would guess that the question asked was more likely something along the lines of "have you ever played a video game?" also id be willing to bet that the sample population probably wasnt very representative of the actual population. people under 25 probably arent as likely to answer a survey.
I guess to me it's not really that big a deal. Sure I've noticed a larger number of women taking up video games in their spare time as they find it's a lot more fun than finding new ways to comb your hair. Hell even my GF and her girlfriends have 'game nights' and I get a thrill out of just her telling me how it went just cause it's something I can associate with. I see the statistic being somewhat true as I've played some chicks at Super Smash Bros. that utterly destroyed me, but their MO revolves around casual party games like SSB and Guitar Hero, etc. not hardcore, competitive games like Halo or COD. Probably why you don't see them quite as often.
It makes sense, I guess. I'd think guys clock in a lot more hours than women, however games like Minecraft seems pretty hard for me to imagine since it's a pretty solo-based game unless you go on servers in which I rarely ever see/know about girls on servers. Eh, could just be my ignorance.
Lol I knew I could find this which seems somewhat relevant to the subject: I swear I'm like a spitting image of Hat-guy sans the hat.
Seeing as this thread has become a troll thread, I'm gonna swing back to the real subject and mention that most of us on here are here because we play FPS games, which isn't the sort of environment you would find a girl gamer, although there are a few who can put up with the endless spam of the 5 year olds wanting to be their friends. Some girl gamers probably don't even play online, and they may not want to play an FPS, maybe they're happy to sit and play Wii Fit or Kinect offline.
Hooray for the unintentional sexism in this thread! Way to change the tides of the frequent alienation of female gamers.
Just thought Id mention that, out of the 40 or so people I have on my friends list, four of them are female, and I met three of them whilst playing Halo. The other was on Guitar Hero. The ones I did play on Halo are really good at it and gave me a good challenge. I should also mention that I played them while I had my mic on, and I talked to them like people, not something that needed to be ridiculed, and I had a blast playing with and against them. They added me to their friends list, not the other way around, so they must have had fun as well. That, or my charm is even more powerful than I imagined, and must be stopped before it destroys us all . Ive helped them with LASO challenges, and just mucked around with them in MM, and I dont see any reason why other guys think they should put them down or treat them as second-class citizens, because these girls would kick your ass. Seriously, next time you get online, if you encounter a female gamer, dont be a jerk to her. Be nice, and you might find out that, GASP, they're people too, and they're probably better at Halo than you as well.
Hear, hear, in my last clan we had a few decent to good female members, even one of the founders was female. There are a lot of them lurking around but they keep themselves hidden to avoid the constant harrasing of us male gamers, so play nice.
My sister plays Xbox all the time and she's 20 years old. She rarely plays first person shooters (especially online), but she loved these games: -Assassin's Creed (she loved riding horses) -Oblivion (she loved her Shadowmere) -Fable I + II (she spent most of the time accessorizing in Fable II) -Borderlands (cooperative play with me only, too scary alone) -MapleStory (that was a few years ago, I used to play too)
I don't see why this is surprising... Maybe I just live in a town where more teenage girls like vidya than usual? Hell, I've even been convinced by girls to sit down and play starcraft with them instead of going out to meet up with people.
I don't see why people think this is surprising. 17 year old boys is not the key demographic. People who are 35 are, unsurprisingly, the same age as videogames themselves. It makes sense for them to make up the majority. Also, on the women issue, people aren't quite understanding. Just because you play Halo and CoD and games of that nature and never see a girl doesn't mean they don't exist. That'd be like saying girls don't play sports when all you play is football. While girls do play games like CoD and Halo, they have a much larger amount playing iPhone games, Wii games, and MMOs, believe it or not.
exactly. normal girls arent gamers. they may play iphone games or the occasional wii sports, but its just odd for a normal girl to log multiple hours a week on xbox or ps3 or pc, which is what i would call a gamer. its not sexist, men and women are just different when it comes to some things.
