The war against subpar maps rages. My fires of creation have dwindled to tongues, with the recent months yielding ideas as dull and boring as a woefully overdramatized telling of a map's conception. Sometimes it takes the bravery and courage to attempt the new and unknown, and sometimes one must look back on ideas long past. Monolith stands as a testament to one of my older maps, Helix. After some recent suggestions and criticisms, I decided to revisit that map's concept. Monolith is a larger, more cohesive map built from the ground up with a gameplay-oriented focus. I constructed Helix with a similar "back to basics" mindset, and I hope that comes across in this map as well. Check out the screens below: Weapon List: x2 DMR (60 seconds, 2 spare clips) x2 Needle Rifle (90 seconds, 2 spare clips) x2 Needler (90 seconds, 1 spare clip) x2 Spiker (90 seconds, 1 spare clip) x1 Sniper Rifle (120 seconds, 1 spare clip) x1 Grenade Launcher (120 seconds, 4 spare clips) x4 Plasma Grenades (30 seconds) The map itself has four-way symmetry, and the weapons are laid out in an inverse symmetrical way. Current concerns include the side hallways feel a little too open at this point, and since it has four-way symmetry the level geometry might get a bit stale. The budget clocks in just under $5000 (grrr Decorative pieces for being so expensive, but it taught me not to use Braces, Large for everything ). I would love to get a group together to playtest this sometime, or if you'd like to playtest it yourself, the map is on my file share. Any comments and criticisms are welcome, and thanks for reading!
Blatantly stolen Nexn structure It looks good so far. This contest is gonna have some nice submissions, I reckon.
yea this is going to be a beast competition and everyone is competing i can't wait, yea and the center-piece has been stolen many times so it's ok lolz.... can't wait to see it reminds me of gears of war 2 blood drive for some reason
Just looked up Nexn's maps, now I feel stupid -__- No worries, I can change it up at any point. I'm definitely looking forward to the other contest entries too. Now that you mention it, boomerdude, I can somewhat see the Blood Drive resemblance, with the front-middle of the map at least.
TitanC005, I've asked that contestants only mention the budget contest inside the thread and not in the title. This is in the contest rules. I will let this go, but I am going to make it more clear that this is not allowed. Anyways, I really like the look of this map. I see some slight similarities to Select in matchmaking, which is my favorite of the symmetrical maps they added.
My friend the Edit Button and I say we named the thread no such thing Sorry about the rule breaking there, got her fix'd. Next I'll submit a map with $4999 budget remaining and doom myself for good. Anyways, thanks for all your comments. I'm sure there will be some very stiff competition.
Awesome dude, I appreciate it. I didn't even know you could do that in the edit tab until I decided to check the advanced features just now. I've let nutduster know to follow your example. Just so you know, you may mention the contest inside the thread in your map description, just not in the title
