The Solar Sailer as seen in the movie TRON:Legacy is a grid based computer program used to transport data, software, and other programs to different parts of the grid. It utilizes data transmission beams for transport. I was trying to think of different ideas for a TRON themed map. I like building ship based maps and the first thing that came to mind was the Solar Sailer. The map started very rough around the edges and only slightly resembled the Solar Sailer. Now the map is nearly 100% complete only a few minor additions and corrections (the Solar Sailer and Recognizer are 99% complete, control tower is 85-90% complete and opposite side of hangar with cranes seems a bit empty so more additions may be added). The first image is what the actual Solar Sailer from the movie looks like (Note: I left all the original images from 1st concept and Beta versions all the way up to the final version in order to show the progression): This is the final version of the Solar Sailer (if anything changes it will be minor), overview shot with the latest version of the Solar Sailer: Here is a side profile shot of the final version: Version 2 overview with Sail experiment Beta: The next 2 images are the oldest versions of the Solar Sailer with Sail concept 1 and short frame. The next 2 images are of the Solar Sailer Version 2 with Sail concept Beta: This is the final version of the Solar Sailer, frontal view: This is also the final version of the Solar Sailer highlighting the Sail's housing struts and control platform: This is a rearward view of the oldest version of the Solar Sailer from the Coliseum looking out (the Coliseum windows are there to simulate hangar doors opening). Here's is the Beta version of the Solar Sailer from inside the Coliseum: Here is the final version of the Solar Sailer from the hangar/docking area: These are the filler structures inside the Coliseum to simulate a loading dock and embarkation area the structure on the left is the embarkation ramp (folded up) and the structures on the right are rough drafts of cargo cranes. Eventually there will be a Recognizer and possibly a Light Jet in the hangar as well. Here are new versions of the loading cranes (these more closely resemble the ones seen in the movie), the embarkation platform is still there on the left: This is another newly added structure that serves as the control tower for the hangar bay: Here is the Transmission beam emitter on the back wall of the Coliseum: Last but not least the Recognizer here it is seen from normal eye level looking up: Here is another view of the Recognizer from a top looking down position: Here is a diagonal view of the Recognizer from just inside the hangar bay doors: This is from the inside of the Recognizer's cockpit area (notice the upper and lower controls similar to what was seen in the movie): Enjoy, please feel free to comment and suggest any improvements. In JAIME's honor I FORGE!
needs moar temptest for the beam, and is this ACTUALLY playable or is it an Asthetic map? Another thing is that the front glassy part, i would have used the Glass sails and merged them to make them look like the real dead.
Veer Vadumai: I may actually forge some of the smaller ships with left over budget after the Solar Sailer is completed. I'll probably put them in the hangar next to the entry ramp. Also just had an idea to build a Recognizer either in flight with the Solar Sailer or docked in the hangar. iTz CHEEZ3: moar temptest for the beam? Anyways I was originally thinking aesthetic which is probably where I will post the final version of the map but I may make it some what playable. Also the large antennae are just there to provide the basic shape to eventually build the Sails. [br][/br]Edited by merge: I've added updated pictures of the Solar Sailer with a concept for the actual sail using Glass Sails. I also lengthened it because it seemed too stubby, with the added length I think it feels more like the actual Solar Sailer. In the hangar I added the Transmission Beam Emitter to add a little more detail. Eventually I will add a control room, a Recognizer, and possibly a Light Jet to the hangar as well. Please let me know what you think especially about the 'new' sail I think it's still a little off from the actual sail but close so please let me know about any possible tweaks I could make. Thanks for the great suggestions so far.
Pretty good so far. I think you should redesign the sails again to make them a bit more accurate to the film... although you're DEFINITELY using the right pieces for the job. I think when the End Of Line Club is done, I'm going to try my hand at the Rectifier, in which the solar sailor lands. You mind if I use your final design if I include the Solar Sailor?
Thanks for the comment and nah I don't mind if use the final design. Actually I've already finished the Solar Sailer portion of the map just working on finalizing the entire map now. The sails have been completely redone and now more closely resemble the actual sails from the ship in the movie; this post basically started as a proof of concept in order to see if it could be done. On that topic I'll probably use your Recognizer as a stepping stone for one of my own in this map because you proved it can be done well in Forge. I'll update the preview with more pictures probably later this weekend and hopefully post the full map sometime soon.
