Grand Theft Mongoose is a minigame I am close to finishing. Needs playtesting. The idea is simple: drive the package (flag) from the scenic city with an ocean-front view, through the creepy caverns, through or around (or over!) the security wall and past the guard towers, through the tangles of rocks in the canyon, to your final destination: the buyer on the beach, which pays a premium one awesome point for this package. Six rounds of 2.5 minutes each (half a minute of that is sudden death). The gametype is speed flag, so the flag carrier can shoot (however, he's not able to drive). Offensive team starts with the flag in the city. Teleporters open up after 30 seconds so that team members can move to high ground to lend support to the people on vehicles. Defensive team spawns in the city to start with, having their own rides to try to keep up with the attackers - however, subsequent spawns for all players are on the guard towers overlooking the canyon, and there's a hog near one of the guard towers as well. The flag carrier gets a boost in damage resistance, but he walks slowly, cannot jump (which keeps him from teleporting anywhere), and is bright gold with a waypoint over his head that makes him visible to all. The flag is set to instant return if touched by an enemy, or 5 second return if the carrier dies and no one touches it. Every player starts with a needle rifle and magnum, and there are a few concussion rifles, grenade launchers, DMRs, and focus rifles around. (The intent of the weapon set is to make the vehicles harder, but not impossible, to destroy.) Side note: I am also working on a multiplayer version of just the city. That will be released on its own at some point, probably.
Actually we ran a small test last night and unfortunately there are some unforeseen issues with how the gametype works. I'm going to post a separate thread about it to brainstorm some solutions to the problem. As it stands now, it's not quite as fun as I was hoping. If I can't come up with a fix, I might just turn this into a big race map or something.
Thanks man, I will look for you if & when I get a big group together. This game really needs at least 12 players to work. In other news, I'm updating the original post in a minute with new screenshots and info on how the game works now. It's been changed from stockpile to speed flag, and the flag rather than the mongoose is now the key element. Otherwise it works about the same way as before. In other other news, I'm also working on a standard multiplayer version of the city from this map. This was something I had in mind when I was first building it, and hopefully it will play well for big team CTF, snipers, and slayer. The rest of the GTM course has been deleted and a lot of stuff has been added to the city to make it more fun to play in. I'll probably do a preview thread for it soon.
Ok, I am feeling left out. I said I would help out any time and I haven't seen it since your prototype. I can help test any time remember dude?
You're welcome into the testing session tonight if you're free, it will start around 7 PM Eastern assuming I have enough people to run it. (This won't be the only game we're testing, rather one of at least four or five.) Don't feel left out or anything, just realize that I'm not looking for a co-forger - I'm a cranky creative type and I like to work mostly by myself. Don't take it personally. The number of friends I spend a lot of time forging with is zero. EDIT - new preview clip. This is a partial run, they needed to get through the rest of the canyon to score. I love the beginning though - despite the huge black arrow pointing left 13 - :15), they go right, hit a curb, and flip their ride. Whoops. After the reset it shows more what I hoped the game would be like - lots of high-speed driving and vehicles exchanging fire. YouTube - Grand Theft Mongoose (preview clip)
What are you trying to do in invasion? If you want to put up a new thread about it I might be able to answer your questions. I just got done forging two invasion setups myself and I'm pretty sure they're working properly (well, pending the results of tonight's tests, I guess).
