Just go do something else, like drive a warthog around in big team regardless of if you have a gunner and try to splatter people. For about a month I don't think I ever took more than a few shots (mostly at enemy wraiths) with the DMR then went back to it and found I wasn't nearly as bad as when I started.
Moral of the story: You don't have to use the DMR to get better with it.

It comes naturally. Just play awhile. But, don't get to the point where you just stand and shoot. Never forget to strafe. Mostly, I concentrate on my strafe during DMR duels rather than hitting people because, as I said, it comes naturally.

I dunno, really, I guess. Good luck :p

I use a 4 look-speed and jump up and down while aiming for the head. Try that.

-_________- no response. That's called 'aiming'. This thread is about how to improve aim. Not how to aim..

I know. But it's not a spamming problem. It's a miss the shot problem.

play with your sensitivity settings and find the perfect balance, play some AI/customs to train, crouch/zoom to get the best accuracy (on long range fights), be sure to strafe and jump around to make yourself harder to hit.

Play Gruntapocalypse as a warm-up. It trains you to relax yourself mid-fight.

With the exception of MyWhiteFlag's suggestion, these all seem to be focused around improving in general rather than simply getting your shot back up to standard after a break, which I think is what Values is saying. All good advice in principle for sure, but changing your sensitivity, for example, when you've already found a good point and just need to brush up again after finding your shot has slipped, is something I'd personally tend away from. I always think that changing your sensitivity is a pretty big step if you've already found one you're comfortable with.

So you'rethe ass who keeps stealing our Warthog, running off without a gunner and getting yourself (and our Warthog) killed. Values, I would recomend you not listen to Pyro. Just play a bunch of competitive Custom Games with friends. You'll get better over time, don't worry.

That sounds like a decent idea. I think I might start warming up with Gruntapocalypse.

I only do that with the enemy warthog if I can't get away, or with a friendly warthog if people refuse to get in the turret.
When you say getting myself and the warthog killed, do you realize that in the most recent game of halo I played I got more splatters than than driver assists in the warthog?
Warthog gunners are helpful, but not absolutely necessary.

Seen this about a thousand times in Halo 3 and Reach:

    1. Guy jumps in warthog
    2. Guy drives off like his ass is on fire while two or three guys try to get his attention with the standard "HEY, I WANT TO MAN THE GUN" shots to the taillights
    3. Seven seconds pass
    4. Red X appears on screen, far in the distance

Unless you're playing against assholes, gunners are more than a minor asset. I highly recommend them - they are so choice.

Anyway, back to DMR aiming. I definitely second the recommendation of Gruntpoc for warming up and just refining your aim in a low-pressure environment. In multiplayer I recommend finding some good spots where you can see people coming from far away - some of the high ledges on Sword Base or outside one of the enclosed lifts, looking down toward the doorway, on Countdown - and use 2x zoom and just pace your shots while making sure to follow your target. You'll improve with time. Try to keep everything head level and if your target is moving sideways (just moving from place to place, or strafing) lead the shot a tiny amount - literally like you're trying to graze his cheek or nose.

Play matchmaking. Its a great confidence booster, and that is most of what it takes to play really well imo. Skill helps, but when you expect to get the kill you tend to be calmer and do better.

I'd just say gruntpoc and easy customs/mm until you get yourself up to what you consider your standard. Get back into the grove n stuff.

Warming up via firefight, as mentioned, is good.

Random tidbit of advice that I don't know where I picked up is to count your shots. Something about mentally (or verbally, if you're the type of person who has to move their mouth when they read) going "one... two... three... four... five..." when you land a shot helps you do it more calmly and makes you more conscious of when to place body shots and when to switch to going for the head shot.

If I was going to do something like that, I'd take a mongoose. Just because most people who drive warthogs are little kids who don't know what teamwork doesn't mean I am.

Nospampost: I find grunpocalipse tends to be not so good because at least for me it lags enough to make headshots almost impossible. Playing firefight local can eliminate the lag, and allows you to give yourself and the enemies custom traits. Sometimes it can be helpful to put skirmishers on instead so you have to deal with them moving much more, and to make sure you're getting headshots you can also turn the damage resistance up significantly so the only way to kill is a headshot. I find SWAT is also a good way to practice getting headshots and dealing with smart (relative term here) people on the other team, but if you're DMR skills are too rusty that might be a bad idea.
