I have to call bs on your first point on principle, and on the second point because we have a long proud history of silly names here.

Step 1. Think of word semi-related to your map.
Step 2. Open a thesaurus and select the oddest word you can find that may not even mean the same thing as the word you originally thought of.
Step 3. At the start of your map post, make sure to explain the definition of your map name. Bonus points for doing it in dictionary format.
    Step 4. ???
    Step 5. Downloads?

I do something similar. One word to describe the map, then a "somewhat" obscure synonym.

I described my map as "roomy". synonyms for "room". I picked compass.

It's a pretty solid system actually.

    Also,

    this.

most maps are one word, there is a shitload of maps.

want something original, so that your work is not mistaken for another.

my last map was just a finnish translation of quarry, as thats where i built it!

I wanted to name a map "Wilford Brimley" because it was so sweet, it would give you diabetes.

These are all maps I'm working on/ designing/ finished with. Do any of these sound cheesy or dumb?

    ArkAngel
    Cavalier
    Vestige
    Invasion: Uprising
    Umbra

I think ArkAngel might be the worst offender, but I think the rest are pretty normal... right?

Normally a name will come to me as im working on the map in question. Its easy to name a map based on its look, feel or gameplay. Sometimes (more often with plain, tournament style maps) its hard to think of a name which fits, I think this is where people start to call it random words.

I'm thinking this was directed to me lol.

Anyways, I couldn't really make an underwater MLG map, but i made the map hang off the ceiling and dip into the water. Also, i just needed a name when I thought of the band, submersed (good band btw)

@OP: having a coherent makes the map so much better (not really but it just offers a better presentation), but there are tons and tons of maps with available map names depleting and being reused

I actually used to like giving my map a random name and/or "wtf" name... but now, I do give it a name I feel suits the map.

If you're gonna name your map something obscure, please at least make it a noun.

    Let's see...

Aerocrest - Not really a word, but perfectly coherent. The prefix and root having some background meaning as well. Aero because the map was originally in the skybubble, Crest referring to the ceiling structure of the original map.

Threshold - A bit typical, but the map had several hill-like LOS blockers, or thresholds.

Obsidian - Aesthetic map, where the primary focus did resemble obsidian.

    This could take a while

Sandbox - All have fairly relevant names for what the map s about

    Sacrifice - Large Sacrificial Chamber
    Exile - Abandoned Dam
Titan / Colossus - My Largest Maps at the time
Chaos Theory - Crazy multifloored map
Jahara - Desert / Cave Theme

    Forgeworld

Overflow - Plenty of water in the map
Poseidon - Watery remake of Titan
    Narrows - N/A
Quarantine - Clean and enclosed map
    Exodus - Remake of Exile
    Incarnation - Wizard Remake
Ivorian - Grey and Sandy coloured map, similar colour to Ivory
Tayari - Similar to Tayari Plaza from ODST

I think all my maps have names which work, fit the map and sound good. Other people may see the name and think it is silly or wrong because they dont know the story behind it. I guess this is where the author should try to get the point accross in the text in his or her map thread.

I like map names that are strongly indicative of a central theme but then when you download them they aren't that way at all. You find something like Arctic Chill and it turns out to be an MLG styled square map with no distinguishable landmarks.

I have a map on my xbox called cascade and the whole map is about transporting players to the top so that they can rain down on their enemies and I think that's the most clever name.

Esoteric and nonsensical map names should be avoided, that's what it all boils down to. Song long as the name fits the theme, or certain aspects of the map, then it's usually a good name.

/thread, unless there are further comments.

<agreement with OP, adulation and flattery of their insights (to the point of brown nosing)>
<list of map names that I find also to be irrelevant>
    <self-congratulatory tidbit on my arbitration>
    </thread>

EDIT: Ah, I've seen my automatic posting script ran into a little error there. Sorry folks, it usually can copy the generalities of a thread seamlessly. Looks like there just weren't any more unique names that it could have posted that weren't already pointed out.
