Deathtrap (Sandtrap re-imagined) IMPORTANT UPDATE! THE MAP HAS BEEN POSTED! I really, REALLY want to do a Sandtrap remake/rework. So I think I will. This thread will detail my progress through the map and will eventually provide a link to the finished product. Support and suggestions during the process from YOU, dear community, would be more than appreciated! Temporal project name: Deathtrap Note that this is merely an idea at the moment. I have not yet begun to build the geometry in forge. A map with this caliber of awesome takes...planning... I'm not doing a complete remake of Sandtrap...rather, a realization of what the map would have looked like before it fell to ruin and was consumed by sand.
If you pull this off correctly, people will love it. One question, where do you plan on building this map?
I love the sound of this, but yeah, space might be an issue. Mind that I'm thinking roughly the same size which I suppose it needn't be.
You will have to adjust your scaling. In the picture of yourself drawing it out, you have a scale of 1 square = 1 2x2. By that scale, you will need 40 1x1s, or 8 5x5 flats to do one straight section. If I remember correctly, that's only 1/4 of the map, then you have to go in and fill it out. Not to try and discourage you, or anything; I just want to make sure you know what you're getting into.
I'm thinking either the canyon or the shore between the cave and the island, but most likely the canyon. Scaling will definitely be an issue, which is one of the main reasons why a faithful remake of Sandtrap is difficult to make. When I do schematics, the scaling that I use isn't always precise; more like estimations to make translation from paper to geometry easier. I'm going to do my best to rework it into something original so that it can fit and work, but also incredibly similar to Sandtrap. Aesthetics and intense vehicle gameplay, the staples that characterized the map in Halo 3, will be my primary focuses.
Not to advertise, but check out my remake of Sandbox. i built it in a location that's just the right size for the playable area; perhaps you could take inspiration from some of my structures (you're fully welcome to). But yeah, I would suggest doing it in the canyon, and using soft kills and possibly landmines to mark off the borders.
Thank you for the suggestion, and I'll be sure to check out your map(s), but I think I've decided on a nice, underused space... With a little plugging up, I've made a good expanse of land here that's just about as wide as the canyon and without all the crazy bumpiness. My budget after plugging is still around $8500. I'm going to measure out the length of all the structures in Sandtrap just to be more comfortable, but I'm thinking this will work. Plus, I really like the theme going on here.
Don't forget to measure in warthog lengths, as they stay roughly the same throughout the games. So halo warthog=halo 2=halo3 =reach warthog
It took me a few glances to notice the wraith. That is huge. Should be big enough for a sandtrap remake. All I have to say is good luck and dont start to rush yourself half way through like I do with all my maps. You should add your own touch to it to, thats what can make a awesome remake.
At first it seems like the ideal place, but the hills and mounds of the canyon can become a real annoyance. I'll admit that I started building in the canyon, only to give up and seek out a new location...the area I have now. Well, then you may be interested in seeing this... BLAM! I'm taking the map in a different direction than its Halo 3 predecessor. Partly because I have a few neat ideas I'd like to employ and partly because otherwise it simply will not be possible. This structure, for example, resembles the one where the Spartan Laser spawned near in Sandtrap. As it turns out, that's what it's functioning as in Deathtrap. Much of the two structures is very similar... ...like this room... ...and this one However, there are also a few small variations, including this gravity lift in the back. Uplifting Despite the alterations, I have a good feeling about the future of this map. Thoughts? (btw, here's how the entirety of the map looks. I still have quite a bit of space left. Notice also how the plugging looks much less atrocious once submerged. Budget is around $6500) Stay tuned
Great job so far, 6000$ seems a bit low for the rest of the map though. Im excited to see how it turns out. Good luck.
I'm getting worried about the amount of water on the map. Prior, you showed yourself covering with coliseum walls. Another thing is this: That thing inside the room is way too steep and high. In the previous game, it was easier to jump up on and I liked that. I suggest lowering it a little.
It looks really cramped in there in comparison to the old sandtrap. Not sure if I like that. But it's your map.
Well, in my opinion that is such a bad thing. You see while I liked Sandtrap and all, the one thing that really annoyed me about it was that it was so large and as a result made it take longer for me to get from point A to point B. Yes use the canyon and it is probably the best place to do it and if it seems smaller then the original then don't worry about it.
Don't vehicles slow down in water? I know that even in shallow waters, Mongooses slow down dramatically. You'll want to keep that in mind, OP. (I think that Forge pieces and especially Grids also give less traction, meaning that vehicles are faster on land than on them.)
Good idea...I'll make it just low enough so that you can jump up onto it without much trouble. This should also make the room look less "cramped", as the angled sides of the platform will be lowered in unison, phasing into the floor. Also, more headroom. I don't have any new screenshots at the moment, but basic geometry is just about finished. I actually have more room than I needed, but I like that. This map is definitely turning into my own thing, but Sandtrap has been an extremely heavy influence.
