It's unlikely that you'll see any of the "halo 3" style of race maps on our front page. That's not what we want to promote as good race maps. The issue with the race genre, and the reason it doesn't see as much love on our front page, is because it never evolves. A large amount of the race maps are the same **** with a few different turns. It'd be like constantly featuring slight variations of The Pit. Sure it's a great map, but no one wants to continually play The Pit with a few ramps changed around so that the pathways feel a little different. As it stands, race basically means getting a good starting position and not screwing up. There isn't a whole ton of thought put into it. There is very little "risk vs reward" which most competitive in nature things rely on. Race became very stale, but there wasn't much to be done about it in Halo 3. Reach, on the other hand, offers a ton of new opportunities to the genre yet people haven't been capitalizing on them. We don't want to promote a style that needs to change and have race forgers think that is what they need to build in order to get a feature. You may argue hex isn't competitive, but quite frankly it is much more so than the "typical" race map. Not only do you have to rely on yourself not screwing up, you have to worry about hazards (other racers). The map finally puts a bit of driving skill to the test in that racers will actually cross paths and meet up. Typical race doesn't ever do that. If someone is decent enough to not make a mistake, it isn't hard to push the mongoose full tilt and stay in front 100% of the time. Hex offers up something that most of those other race maps don't.
I never said it wasn't competitive. Someone else must have said that. You all keep saying that race maps don't evolve. I could say the same about most competitive maps. It's all been debated before. I don't really care to go there. It doesn't matter to me that you won't feature Halo 3 style banked maps. I can just go to Halotracks to find those kind of maps and features.
It astounds me that you even come to this site if all you have to say about it is how everything is wrong. I'm not much of a Race fan, but this is by far one of the more interesting maps I've seen for it. Congrats guy.
There is a ton of diversity to competitive play. Sure, competitive play is basically locked into what Bungie provides, but as far as maps go there is usually a vast difference between the best of the best. Yeah you get midship clones that all have a ton of very similar aspects, but the better ones are diverse enough that they are still fun playing. Even still, when it comes to clones you can play five slightly different pit clones, five slightly different midship clones, a few slightly different lockout clones, etc, etc and you still have a good lineup of competitive maps that play largely different with a familiar feeling. Weapons help too. Race doesn't have this. The mongoose basically goes two speeds: fast and slow. Breaking barely matters, etc. So when you start making a bunch of bank maps, they are feel the same because the gameplay is stale. There is no reason not to mix in the crossing paths, multiple choices, hazards, etc. But those typical maps don't and they stay boring. If you wanna play that then that's great, but don't complain at us for not enjoying it anymore after three years.
I do. This map is very original. I still enjoy the occassional 'normal' race maps (going in one direction the entire time), but I do think this deserves to be recognized. This was the first map in Reach I could give a rating of great, so far. (Unless Genome was featured, and in that case, this would be the second.) Even if you don't like the map, you should still acknowledge that the creator came up with a new, refreshing twist to the race genre. With this map, I can see the race forgers being inspired by this, and perhaps further evolving the race genre. This is definitely a good change to the eventually-boring one-directional race maps. 9/10
I played this game in Buddacranes party on TGIF. And I won . Mainly on luck to be honest. It was so much fun and very frustrating at times lol. I hope that we see that other race map we played on which was like this but more complex.
precise placement of curves and safety rails. superb forging, one of the best tracks thus far, IMO though narrow, even hograce is fun on it
*not agreeing with either side, just making an observation to help the side that isnt a condescending ahole*
DROP IT. Dream, if you want to make a contribution to the community, recommend features. There's the general thread that's already been linked, and you have access to the hub pub. If you think people don't listen to you, it's probably because you cause a scene every time a race map is featured that wasn't recommended by you, and again, you don't recommend maps so that's all your doing. If you continue to post here on some tangential tirade, I will ban you. I'm sick (physically ill too, but that's an unrelated matter) of your hypocritical attitude and I've already tried multiple times to calm you down through PMs over the past year. But frankly my patience is at an end as nothing seems to get through to you. So either contribute, or quit complaining. The same goes for everyone else in this thread. Discuss the map on its own merits or stay out.
The best and only way to play Race in Halo Reach that doesn't feel like a futile gesture if you're not in 1st. Remember kids, drive on the right side of the road, or Chuck will get mad! XD
hahaha "EVERYBODY STAY ON THE GODDAMN RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD OR YOU'RE BOOTED" nemi, were you there when we did 50 laps?
Dream, how dare you offer a personal viewpoint on the stance of featured race maps! Not only did you give valid points and reasoning behind your criticism, but you did it a manner that didn't offend anyone or break any rules. You make me sick.
I played a few harrowing and laughter filled games on this and it was a ton of fun. It's a neat idea taking an eight figure track and add another loop to mix. It's like demolition derby, but on steroids. The curves are smooth and keep up momentum to turn speedy racers into rolling wrecking balls. In one game, players even form alliances to protect each other and divert would be wrong doers. It was a lot of fun and it definitely took work to maintain the lead and even more to take it. Again, lot's a fun and something different on the front page.
I just played this for the first time tonight. All I can say is that this map made me laugh out loud, swear, cheer and laugh out loud again. Everyone in the game was laughing and having fun. That fact along with the seamless forging makes this map 100% worthy of a feature. I would like to see this map set up for 'hog the hill' game types too. A rocket race type game but with grav hammers for 'jousting' as the mongeese pass eachother could be quite entertaining too.
