    Kitsgepia (Tempest Map)

So, after having lost this map to a weird glitch, I've remade most of it. My third forge, first time trying to use the natural (Bungie-built) land and structures fully. Probably going to make it an 8 player FFA map. It circles around fully using the cave systems, just can't see that in the screens.

It's really annoying that changing the thread title doesn't actually work on these forums.

Looks cool from what little the pictures can show. Pic one looks awesome in particular. Just send me an invite if you're testing.

It's kind of hard to get good screens in those tighter areas. :( I also really wish we had more than 50 rocks.. and I miss the Seastack (I feel like I'm the only one) because it's such a great space-eater (it's like 2 Spire 3's... which would have allowed me to close off areas more efficiently).

It's still in development but yea, I'd love to have you come along and figure out where I can open things up a bit more. :D

    Good map.
The first and last pictures are pretty good. Hopefully it plays very well WITH those great asthetics.

I also have an idea for a name! What about
    Foundation
The forerunners have many devices. We have never gotten to inspect the interior of one. However it appears we will, but not from a scholar's point of view.

Hmmm, foundation seems like it would already have been a used name. Thanks though - I like your little description to go along with it. Don't think I'll be using it but it sounds interesting.

    Update 12/17/10
    :

*Spawn and respawn points have been placed. May need revision.
*Power-ups and Energy Sword will not spawn at the start of the game (this was done to allow somewhat balanced spawning).
*Map-specific classes are being worked out. This is not a Jet Pack-compatible map, so this is required. Like in Civility, I'm considering banning Armor Lock as well.
*Aesthetics/Cover have been added to the main tunnel.
*Power weapons have been placed in spots I feel are balanced enough for heavy casual.

Question: In the area with the energy Sword, it is currently very easy to camp the entry teleporter. There are a number of ways to remedy this but I really am leaning towards the idea of covering the entire section in a Soft Kill barrier. After all, there's hazardous energy just zipping about and possibly heavy radiation, so why not. How does that sound to everyone in terms of gameplay?

I'd like to start testing this map.

The soft kill zone seems very realistic and reasonable.
Thanx for the complimentz. I have been told I'm very creative....

Attempted to get a game on this map yesterday, didnt get a good turn out so instead I just had look around in forge. The map is pretty awesome. It has a good mix of close quarter combat with a larger open dance floor good for long range battles. The sword room with the soft kill zone is pretty cool and would need testing to see how well it plays.

The only thing I am not sure about is the gametype you have setup for it. I understand it is meant to be a casual map but I think it would be better if you kept the original slayer variant and just removed the jetpack loadout.

If need any more help like spawning/objectives/etc I am willing to help out.

p.s: Side note, those invisible barriers around the waterfall are SOOO gay. It would have been awesome if you could walk under it in your map. Ah well.

    Looks interesting..
I'll keep my out for the release of this.
That sword room Crypt mentioned sounds strange, from what I can see it looks pretty cool though.
Any idea when you're releasing this?

Probably before my second map. Since I'm not working on as many gametypes for this one (and it's much smaller), it's been easier to get it moving along and tested. Had the first test of 5 players today. The sword room confused players, so it needs to be fixed. I really wish I could raise the out of bounds timer to 20 seconds. I really want to keep that place uncampable and the soft kill seemed most efficient. :( Sadly, it puts panic in the player and disorients them long enough for them to die. I can't very well place hazards there, since the hazards can't be detonated before entering. I mean, it's not so bad. The players figured it out after their first entry but even dealing with that the first time is enough to turn someone off.

Aside from that, the test went very well. Very few complaints so far, no people dropping from the match in 'hate quits'. Even some saying it was awesome. I just... need to come up with a name for it, soon. x_x I was thinking of a name I gave a character in a story I wrote but that makes it a bit out-of-touch for random people.

@ Cry: I knooooow! >=[ I spent a bunch of time today popping through the invisible walls (being way above the map is awesome) just out of spite. :c

I don't really understand the sword room. If you could elaborate?

And uh, what name would that be?

    Update:

I wanted to build inside the Power Source but it's not a large enough area to allow fighting, so I decided to put a power weapon there. I considered using the watery area below it as well but it also suffers from being too small to be combat compatible. Aside from that, I'm not really sure what confuses you about the sword room, since you haven't been on the map. It's in a few of the screenshots, though.

The name was Kitsgepia... which isn't related to any language, so it wouldn't be something anyone but myself could identify with or even relate to the map. I'm still debating on the name... I kind of like that the name is NOT relatable to anyone but that could be problematic.

Little update for those that have played on the map - Rockets have been moved and the path on top of the cave is more obvious. Respawn zones had their nipples tweaked some and weapons have been given a few changes in various parts of the map (the weapons by the low traffic back area have more ammo, for instance). For those that still haven't figured out how the map works - logs, lights, and seemingly out-of-place items (like a tree with a branch that the other 2 lack) are used to draw attention to certain items or areas.

    On to the update:
The map has been pretty much solid for the past few weeks. Still not releasing it since Civility isn't done (so this will end up in a map pack instead). It plays very well so far from 6 to 10 players in FFA gametypes. It is not and will not be set up for any team play. I'd still like a few more tests for the other gametypes it supports. Possibly a video as well. It's STILL ridiculously hard to get testers with the map pack. Anyway, here are the screenshots.

[IMG]Frontal view of one of the main areas. No, the yellow ball is not a light. It's a custom power-up. This is also close to what the loadout cam displays.

Wow, thanks man! I was extremely surprised at the group seeming to have lots of fun. I'm very glad it turned out that well - since the intent is for fun and casual gameplay. In reviewing the video, I was most pleased that there wasn't a single player dominating over the others (though you and Steve did have the highest scores >=[) with any specific power weapons (because the map has a LOT) or points on the map. It fits what my profile bio states. :)

I considered putting it in my fileshare for public testing... but I'd rather not do that and have people playing it and not downloading it when I officially release it.

One thing that bugged me though. Players couldn't immediately figure out what the custom power up does, aside from removing their shields. I'm going to list out the effects now, so players know during any future tests. Speaking of, there are a few tweaks I had in mind but I'm afraid to make, in case it suddenly ruins the fun of the map.

No shields (so you are very vulnerable to head shots and super combines)
    500% dmg resists
125% Weapon damage (I think I'm going to do further tests and put down a chart to compare how many shots it takes for powered-up weapons vs normal weapons)
    125% speed
    110% jump
Melee damage is raised as well... but it always seems to take one level of shield away per hit anyway. >_> And speaking of shields, overshield should put the blue shield around players like what you see on Grunts and Brutes in Campaign. It's impossible to tell when someone has picked it up. :s

that could prove to be confusing, because:

no matter how cool of an idea you have for what the custom powerup does,
there is always going to be the uneducated player who did not read your forum post and has no clue what is going on... sometimes you have to cater to the lowest denominator.
in a more casual map like this one, i suppose it doesnt really matter as much, but the principle is still valid. i personally didnt even notice the powerup there the entire game. when i was in that area, i was more focused on taking cover from other players.
in that regard, it is in a good risk/reward location, but still, unless a player has read your post, they'll have no idea what they are grabbing when they grab it.

since you seem to be cool with pitching it as a casual map, which i totally support, i think it will be fine and irrelevant. but if you plan to pitch it as competitive, it might pose an issue to certain people with certain tastes. its up to you.

i think its great to have more casual maps around personally. i love em just as much.

I played this last night, and dominated the **** outta everyone.

I didn't like how overshields and CPU were in the same area.. I found the overshield.. collected it.. and I was like.. OOO A CPU! Picked that up, and lost all my overshields...
    Pain in the backside.
I suggest moving the Overshields to the opposite side of the map.

And I agree totally with titmar.. this is definately a casual map as the map flow is fairly restricted, but it provides some entertaining gameplay.

It wasn't intended to be more than casual. I don't 'do competitive' so it was simply read correctly.

I played a game on this map, and:

    1.) I didn't understand the custom powerup
2.) The lift hurt you sometimes

Other than that I liked it. It played fairly well and didn't look to bland. Nice job.

A few changes were made - most notably the one in the screenshot. There is now a structure outside of the map to tie it into the other maps in its map pack. :D I revised some kill areas have been revised, though the revisions shouldn't be noticeable unless someone alters the game type by injecting a jet-pack (they'll die :v). 2 Plasma Rifles have also been added, seeing as they are almost as good as the Spiker (ran tests).

Civility is almost ready for release as well: http://www.forgehub.com/forum/halo-reach-forge-discussion/113952-civility-testing-3.html#post1316770

Normally, I'd say play MLG but since he said this isn't a competitive map, that would prove invalid. As he said though, this is a casual map, so it may just be some kind of aesthetic decorative. Or to show Tsquared that no one likes him again.
