Already seen a few tempest forge maps with the laser incorporated and, to be fair, they look pretty good. But i can't help but wonder how many maps will be posted purely and simply on the strength of that beam, similar to the glut of really bad 'water dipping' maps that clogged up the forums the weeks after forge world came out.
Most likely.. but what can you do about it? Nothing but not download the maps... To be fair, a map shouldn't really be judged by it's feature points anyway. The fact that most people won't forge on Tempest because of the limited space and the kill-barriers and the invisible walls kinda makes the forge space suck.. So most people who do forge on Tempest, will most likely put the laser in just for the effect as it's different to Forgeworld. Doesn't mean the map's gonna be any good though!
Considering that a large number of forgers are sheep who hop on any bandwagon possible, yes it will be over done just the same. "Oh cool! Water!" = "Oh cool! Laser beam!" At least the laser has little affect on game play though... I do hate how bright the lighting is there instead.
No no. The laser beam will be the new tree. Just wait, and you'll see the next feature will have a laser in it.
I don't know, we might already have too many laser maps. Vanilla came along with the right idea at the right time - I think it got featured about .001 seconds before the flood of tree maps came along.
Yeah Vanilla was definitely at the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure others had the idea roughly the same time. But Vanilla implemented it better, and then also inspired many more to do the same.
theres a couple maps with the laser beam, and people are already bitching. my guess is people are just upset they didnt come up with it first, or they're upset because they have a map in the works that uses it, but got beaten to the punch. its one of the only decently sized areas to forge in on Tempest, we're just going to have to accept that there will be a large amount of maps with the laser beam. some will be good, some bad. quityerbitchin
I really do despise everyone saying that trees are overrated, ForgeWorld HAS trees all over, if you're building on the ground, you're likely to run into one of them.
lol at Titmar. As far as the laser beam becoming the new "insert popular gameplay mechanic here". Look, the reason why similar concepts seem to be repeated over and over again is because usually those concepts are met with positive reviews. Also once one example of something different is done and sees positive reviews it is much more likely that people will want to copy it. So like people above me said, Tempest is a pretty limited forge space, and the largest usable forge space to do anything on is by the laser beam so expect many laser beam maps.
It may be limited, but you have a solid coliseum sized area that does not involve the laser... And the screen lag issues have been reduced significantly as well... This place is a heaven for any aesthetic enthusiasts who can manage their budget. And Tiltmar, I'll never implement the laser into my map so I'm most definitely not "bitching". I make good enough maps without any cheesy eye catching gimmicks. Superior game play > superior aesthetics. The real issue at hand should be people implementing cheesy gimmicks and useless aesthetics, but having garbage maps. There are way too many over hyped maps here because they're "pretty", but they play like something I can fish out of my toilet.
One cool thing I wouldn't mind seeing done with the laser would be using it as the beam coming out of a scarab. I think that would be pretty damn cool.
It probably will but Ive just incorporated it into a map and it looks quite good, so seeing as it's not old yet, I see no problem with doing it. Of course I won't do it with any future maps, and hopefully now that it's been done it won't be repeated too many times.
DERP I'm so high and mighty because I think that my ability to recognize the overuse of an element makes me smart DERP
last time i checked maps that don't play well, don't do well in the long run. overhyped or not overhyped, tree or no tree. while i do agree with most of what you're saying about gameplay vs aesthetics, id say you're blowing it a bit out of proportion, and one more thing: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/arrogance
Whoooooops! Sorry, looks like I've been misreading your name all this time. Chuck, I didn't mean to sound arrogant. I'm merely stating that we have a plethora of subpar maps. I'm not saying mine are better, but rather, fecal extract is still is relevant comparison. A map that looks pretty but is unplayable due to excessive frame rate issues is ****, there is no denying it. You can package it in a beautiful box of gift wrap (aesthetics), but it is still ****.
I hope people don't get too turned off by having the beam incorporated into maps. I've been thinking about using it in a future creation.
can anyone confirm for sure that the beam causes extra screen lag? i know Tempest is supposed to have minimized the screen lag problem, so ive heard. but i was messing around making something up there, and i noticed a little lag when i was in monitor mode. does it lag the game in customs as well?
