What do you think you guys are going to do after you're done making maps for Halo Reach? Would you retire? Would you start doing something else? Or is forge simply a training device for your future in game development.

Personally, I imagine forge as the first step into my career as a Game Developer.

That's like saying Guitar Hero is the first step to becoming a musician.

    Thats coz its tru fax.

Anyways, go do some research of Bungie employees, you'll find that most of them have varied qualifications which would also allow them to get jobs in other industries rather than just a degree "Game Development".
There are some old Bungie Podcasts where they interview employees about how they got to Bungie. They've got artists, architects, coders, more artists...

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm sure I saw a Bungie video where they generalised the types of people who worked at Bungie. I think it came down to something like engineers, artists and programmers.

I have been making maps on just about any game that has an editor on for almost 10 years. Started on Starcraft waaayyy back in the day, and have been making maps since. I have done most of my work on Starcraft, Far Cry, and Halo however.

Cool, I find the Starcraft II Editor very powerful. I just wish that I knew how to use it very well. Did you try out the Unreal Editor for UT3. I've been working on re-making one of my Halo Reach maps on it.

I was actually pretty curious about Far Cry's editor. I'm sure I can pick the game up pretty cheap now. Is it a worthy game overall? and is the editor program itself pretty robust. I've looked at some videos and even though my curiosity is peaked I haven't pulled the trigger. What did you think Dontshoot?

The editor is insane, if all you want to do is make maps on it I would definetly recommend it. Being able to completely customize your landscapes was awesome and the editor itself was actually very easy to use. Some of the community made maps were flat out crazy, for example one guy re-created Helms Deep perfectly, and included the cave system. It's a shame that such a great editor had to be paired with such a shitty game, if Halo's editor were half as good as Far Cry's I think all anyone would play would be custom maps. Overall I would still recommend the game in spite of the poor gameplay, just because the editor is so good. Another plus is that the campaign isn't that bad either.

Yeah the Starcraft editors have a steep learning curve, just like the game does. If you are looking to get into editing maps on that, browse this forum. It helped me alot when I was learning my way around that editor.

As for UT3, I played it a little bit but no, I never got into editing maps on that.

The guy made a stinking cave! What I wouldn't do to edit landscapes in Reach.
That's enough to make me wanna buy the game...After I get out of my parent's house, cus they don't like shooter games like that. Which is okay.

I came here and really got into Forging when Halo modding died out. I've been creating content for Halo since 2004 and have really gotten into the mechanics of how things work for it. Halo is where it started for me and is probably where it's gonna end for me. I'm starting to find less time for it every day, especially with the next semester coming up where I'm going to have to start doing a full time schedule and devoting my energy into homework and studying rather than Forging.

As far as moving onto other games, I'm too accustomed to Halo, I can't imagine another game capturing my interest so much to where I'd really feel like creating custom content for it. I play and enjoy other games, but I never really ever feel like really getting into creating custom content for them.

As for the whole game development deal, when I was younger I had wanted to get into it, but I've pretty much completely decided against it since then. I don't really see it being realistic (for me at least). It's a pretty competitive industry, especially with the economy faring the way it is. I might take classes for it somewhere as a hobby or for the hell of it, but I don't ever see myself turning it into a job. Having something as a job tends to ruin it.

I'll stop Forging once the community dies out and turns into nothing but a 'life discussion' website. Until then, I'll always try to set aside some time for it because I really enjoy it.

Some of the guitar hero and rock band songs are easier to play in real life than they are in the game. :p
