Ambition is the "spiritual successor" to a competitive asymmetrical map I designed in Halo 3. It features two symmetrical areas in the center and two distinct “wings,” making the Quarry feel rather spacious and allowing for short to long range skirmishes. My goal was to create a more conventional Bungie map, incorporating plenty of cover in a fairly open and easily navigable layout, with combat revolving around the center isolated combat spaces.

I was pleased to read the following in Chris Carney’s Map Design 101: “One of the elements I really enjoyed about Halo 2’s Ascension and Halo 3’s The Pit was that players could move around the entire circumference of the level while experiencing different sight lines in towards the center of the map and then could choose when to strike or when to keep moving.

For the most part, that simple yet effective design aptly describes Ambition. Its walled-off sections and strategic placement of entrances creates some interesting lines of sight designed around the central hub. There are multiple paths to this combat area which creates a more fluid experience and keeps camping at a minimum.

I was hoping to have more items left over to add some visual flair but gameplay is king, and for that reason you won’t find many objects without a specific intention of enhancing the gameplay in one way or another. Along those same lines, I felt that it was important to reduce as much of the annoying z-fighting as reasonably possible, so you will be hard pressed to find much if any distracting texture flicker on Ambition.

A party of at least 4 is recommended, with a maximum of around 12. I would also suggest DMR starts, although there are plenty of long range weapons placed around the map. All armor abilities are welcome, although in testing the jetpack proved to be particularly effective.

Ambition supports every gametype admirably, but was designed primarily for Slayer (both Team and FFA). In fact, I intend to submit Ambition to Bungie's Forgtacular Contest, specifically for "Team Slayer: 4 vs 4." At the present moment I do not have a very recent saved film that “demonstrates the specified game-type being played correctly on the map”. I would happily just do it myself, but lately my internet connection has been extremely laggy, and so, against my better judgment, I am making the following offer:

The first person to send me a saved film in its entirety of a decent and competitive game of Team Slayer with exactly 8 players on this map will receive up to 10 rendered minutes of any videos (non-HD) of your choice. That’s right, I’m bribing you to play my map. I have no shame.

Just send me a message over XBL. My gamertag is Lametastic.

    Weapons and Vehicles:
    6 DMRs | 20-30 seconds
    2 Needle Rifles | 30 seconds
    2 Plasma Pistols | 30 seconds
    1 Magnum | 30 seconds
    2 Needlers | 45 seconds
    2 Plasma Repeaters | 30 seconds
    1 Grenade Launcher | 60 seconds
    1 Shotgun | 105 seconds
1 Rocket Launcher (no spare clip) | 90 seconds
    1 Sniper Rifle (1 spare clip) | 90 seconds
    6 Plasma Grenades | 45 seconds
    3 Mongooses | 90 seconds
    1 Ghost | 120 seconds

Enjoy and let me know if you experience any problems. Thanks!

this is amazing, this is humongous and awesome. this reminded me of headlong at first, but then I saw that you were taking it to a different angle. it actually feels like 3 different maps are made into one. the middle, left, and right sides of the map feel so different, although that may not be a good thing, it is really cool

Edit: you also convinced me that the part of forgeworld this is on isnt crappy and offers no good maps ( AKA Atom and Cliffhanger), but you made it seem a LOT bigger, than what it actually is. and a lot better

This looks like a great map! I always worry when I see buildings used (like they are at blue base) but the rest of the map looks really pulled together! Maybe just a little more work could be done to make those buildings look more original and sophisticated. Otherwise the lines of sight look FANTASTIC and the map feels both tried and true and original. Great job!

Thanks guys. Ambition was tested quite a bit, but not as extensively as I had hoped. Thanks for nothing, Tester's Guild! (I kid, I kid, I know they're swamped)

Let me know how it plays on your end when you get a chance.

Long time lurker, first time caller. Dude, how does this map not have more downloads? The design is brilliant, it looks amazing and it plays even better. (Team Slayer is cool, but I like FFA even better)

I;ve never seen a map like it and yet it reminds me of a map made by bungie. Great job! I'll send you a friend request if you want to play some customs.
