DYSTOPIA "The massive grey walls of the temples rise from the heart of every Federation city. I have always been awed by them, to think that every single facet of every life is regulated and directed from within! Our books, our music, our work and play are all looked after by the benevolent wisdom of the priests..." Hello all, this is Dystopia, a small/medium asymmetrical map designed to be played on Free For All slayer with anywhere from 2 to about 6 players. I believe there are in fact 7 initial spawns on the map, so you could theoretically play with 7 people, but that would slightly overcrowd it. The initial concept for Dystopia was to make a map using only one type of item, the 2 story tower, by rotating and inverting it so that the map didn't feel repetitive. After I had basically succeeded in that, I noticed that running around was a lot of fun. You could never quite get your head around exactly where everything was relative to yourself, and that gave some fun to it. I decided that one type of item wasn't enough, so a couple of building blocks were thrown in to smooth things out. The result is a criss-crossing system of ramps, bridges and walkways that reminded vaguely of both Prisoner from Halo:CE, and Blackout/Lockout from Halo 2/3. There was also a distinctive claustrophobic effect, with most sight lines reaching only the length of a room, so you're never quite sure where any of your opponents are relative to yourself. This semi-central area (seen from two sides,) was the site of quite a few engagements in my personal 1 on 1 on 1 play testing, but not so much so that it felt like that was the only place we ever fought. Several ramps converge here, so it was a sort of transitory area between levels where you would meet enemies. Jetpacks became popular fast... Then so did needlers... Of course, with the short sight lines... Basically, the needlers kept jetpacks from being overpowered, without being overpowered themselves. Everyone's happy. Overall, the map was a lot of fun to play around on, and i hope to hear what you guys think, especially if you can get some 6 player FFA playtests going, love to see screens of those! Extra pics:
wow. seems pretty creative and fun. i like it. i think you should add some distinction aestheticaly, but it seems fun for small intense matches. but definitely use more pieces and try to vary places of the map more. and if it was bigger you could have a bit of a guardian type map to it, try scaling it up. it seems like it would work really well that way. also, seems like guardrails could be used in more places. but seems fun, just would like to see it scaled up a bit larger.
map looks pretty tight I like the way you kept everything compact and simple but at the same time it still looks interesting. haven't played it yet but ill check it out once i get back on reach later.
well, it is a very nice idea, however, i don't really like the extreme close combat. i think something that would really make this map very nice, would be if you would include an outside part of the map. and keep this part of the map you have now as the center of the map. but that is just what i would do, its really up to you
I'm glad to see someone else making a smaller map, they are few and far between on the hub. Most everything is outrageously huge that will almost never get used with 16 players as a custom map. Anyway, great use of vertical space I enjoy maps like these, tightly packed with many intricacies. The 2-story tower is a little over-used but to good affect. I agree with Wooden Leaf that you could use some aesthetic distinction as a center piece or for player orientation. As a whole I like what you've done to create this map.
