A lot of people have complained that the Boot system is too strict -- so much so that even Bungie has acknowledged this. I think they're wrong, though. I think that it's too strict in some cases and too lenient in others.

List of reasons why it's too strict:

    • If you throw a grenade and some idiot teammate steps directly over it -- booted.
    • If you drive a tank or other slow vehicle and a teammate runs into you and gets splattered -- booted.
    • If you fire a sniper and a teammate runs in your line of fire -- booted.
    • Kill a zombie as it infects you -- booted.
    • If you get teamkilled and teamkill back -- booted.
    • You teamkill the little prick that keeps meleeing you -- booted.
List of reasons why it's too lenient:

    • Teammate melees you the entire game -- not booted.
    • Teammate weakens you, enemy kills you -- not booted.
    • Teammate pushes you off a cliff -- not booted.
    • Teammate pushes you into the path of a vehicle -- not booted.
    My idea to fix it:

Friendly fire points would be a measure of how much damage/deaths you have inflicted upon teammates. Damage would raise your rating a little bit, deaths a lot.

As you gain friendly fire points, it takes fewer betrayals to boot you, but there are other consequences as well.

When your friendly fire gets out of control, the game would start by mirroring your friendly fire. If you, say, like to keep meleeing your teammates to get them one-shot, then you'll start taking damage when you damage them. As your friendly fire points increase, the ratio of damage that you take will increase as well. So you might lose 50% shields when you melee a teammate (.5:1); keep it up, and you'll lose 100% when you melee them (1:1). If you're really stubborn, you'll start losing more damage than you inflict, with the ratio rising higher and higher (2:1, then 3:1, then...) until eventually, any damage inflicted upon your teammates results in your immediate death.

There could even be a lessening of team damage -- as your friendly fire rating goes up, the teammates you harm take less damage from you (but you still take more).

There could also be increasing cR fines as your friendly fire rating goes higher and higher.

To lower it, you'd have to stop committing friendly fire (or do it a lot less) over a period of time. And by the way, FFA games and games with Friendly Fire turned off wouldn't help. To lower your friendly fire rating, you'd have to (mostly) avoid friendly fire in team games where friendly fire is turned on.

(There'd also be a real-time decay factor... So if someone gets a really high friendly fire rating, and then goes offline for a month or two, then when they come back, their rating will have lowered... But real-time decay will be less effective than betrayal-free-game-time decay.)

So those 12-year-old pricks that like to constantly melee you in-game and try to trick you into betraying them? You can enjoy watching as they constantly kill themselves trying to kill you.

    Your thoughts?

I 100% agree with every idea that you expressed. Bungie should seriously consider this.

Also, enemy gets one shot on you, teammate melees you twice - not booted

agree with everything you said. for snipers & grenades, it should be a couple times before you are booted. you get 1 pass maybe?

i really hate when morons can't look both ways before they cross (don't they teach that in kindergarten?) and step in front of my warthog from behind a rock or something. it always happens when i'm on a wheelman spree

I completely agree with this. I think it should be like CoD and if someone betrays you then they die too.

Don't we already have threads discussing Betrayal Booting?

I'm really glad you posted this, because all the time someone betrays me and does not give me the option to boot, and then I accidentally betray them and are booted immediately.

Yes. Just yes. The best solution to betrayal booting IMO. Now we pray Bungie gets wind of it...

Bungie needs to find a solution to their shitty betrayal booting system so I can start playing multiplayer without a full team of friends and return from firefight, but this isn't that solution.

This would need some serious work, but could they at least make it so the betrayal doesn't count if the same shot damaged an enemy, or your reticle passed over an enemy within one second of firing the shot. It could be abused, but not as much as the current system fails.

If they put Friendly Fire for Firefight off then why can't it be for Multiplayer?

It would make suicide bombing not fun anymore :(

IE: You stick a teamate, and then they quickly run into an enemy-infesting area and melee lunge towards a random opponent, and when the sticky asplodes it kills several of your foes.

Yeah, I would be very surprised if they ever removed friendly fire from matchmaking, because people would exploit it.

Not sure if this is necroing -- hope it's not -- but...

I've posted a revised version of this on Bungie.net and haven't gotten a single post. Generally, when I post in a topic on B.net, it dies immediately. I'm like a Thread Murderer. Chances are, I aborted my own thread. ><

Any tips? I might try again later.

EDIT: Wait, I've got some attention. Sorry for possibly necroing this topic, then.

The other day I was having terrible luck. Had 3 betrayals...

    1) Some guy steps onto my sticky after killing the guy I was targeting. Booted.
    2) Driving my hog, trying to escape a Revenant and Wraith, only to end up clipping the head of someone coming up a hill. Booted. And yea, I had passengers - I assume they became sitting ducks.
    3) I had rockets and was catching a guy strafing around my ally's hog. I shoot, the guys in the hog back up into my ****ing rocket. .-. Thankfully, they didn't boot me for that but still, it could have easily happened.

    I'd really enjoy a voting system. x.x

Well the more damage(or actually killing them) you do to allies(even after game ends) the more likely you will be booted when you actually kill someone. If your getting booted first betray means you been hitting your allies or betraying them to much and your on a kind of betrayal probation.

I'm alright with betrayal system, Can't make a perfect system and this one does help, But assholes are gonna be assholes no matter the system set in place.

Besides jerks most betrayals are avoidable by been aware of what your team and enemy team are doing and not having the hole team competing for every kill and mostly betrayers fault

But these points are your own fault just go away from them and don't react in game or vocally and these are probably the reason your getting booted in one betrayal.

    • If you get teamkilled and teamkill back -- booted.
    • You teamkill the little prick that keeps meleeing you -- booted.
