Good job. My only complaint is that you choose a more readable font type and size for the next one. That font, at that size, is kind of hard to read.
I thought that could be a problem when I first posted it. Anyways, it has now been updated with, hopefully, more legible text.
Use .png for the pictures, the quality's not as high as it should be Phenom. Fantastic work on this though, very well written. You missed the part where you were supposed to build the city underneath my ship though ^.^
Thanks for the shout out for Genome. I thought it flew by without notice on this site based on the limited responses here, so it's great to see somebody noticing it. The combined 1200 downloads between version 1 and 1.1 say that somebody's noticed though, so thanks to everyone who's downloaded it. I've played Rendition and Vanilla as well, and both are fantastic maps, probably better than my own. In future issues it would be cool to provide a link to the map threads too. I like the innovation write-up a lot, but I would like to add one note. For a new forger, forging something very similar to a past design (but not necessarily a complete remake) is a GREAT way to learn both mechanical stuff like using objects efficiently as well as important design lessons regarding lines of sight and spawns and all kinds of other hard to define concepts. As you observe how the gameplay changed from the source material to your own version based on the differences you created, you start to build the intuition for design that is of utmost importance to success as a designer. So while innovation is very important for a map to stand out, building a stand out feature worthy map shouldn't necessarily be the goal for someone still trying to learn.
What a great idea! I have to agree about making the font alittle more read-able, whether that's by increasing the size or replaceing the entire font. I like it though. Nice, colorful and cleanly laid out. Can't wait to see Octobers issue
Thanks for the shoutout! This is a really nice article you've put together. I feel the same as Ladnil, I could have sworn that no one noticed Rendition. Anyways here is a link to the thread.
I definitely agree with your point there. It is always nice to get the feel for things when beginning your first few projects, and using that method of approach should be ideal for new forgers. I am not saying that forgers have to go all out on some ridiculous design. A good forger knows how to implement that "wow" factor that great maps maintain without going overboard. Yeah, I will most certainly look into a more legible font and try to make it larger so your eyes are not strained while reading. Thanks for the input!
I think you should provide links to the pages your reference. It would make browsing for them a bit easier. Not that it's all that hard to search for them, but it would still look a bit nicer. It was a nice read either way. I'm currently searching some of these maps that some how slipped past me.
I like the idea of this, but you may want to proofread it a bit more. You spelled adrenaline wrong. But I think if you polished this and got in the swing of things, it would make an interesting newsletter.
Nice read but maybe turning them into PDFs wouldn't be such a bad idea? Either that or PNGs as someone already stated.
I'm 99% sure that adrenalin can be spelled in multiple ways, but I'll be sure to proofread every issue . Sure, I'll definitely start up a subscription opportunity. Great idea! Anyone willing to subscribe can either send me a VM/PM or reply here. I did convert them to PNGs, but I will continue to look for better ways to make the quality the best it can be. Thanks!
