First of all, forts should almost indefinitely always have walls, walls are very important because thet allow your fort to make sense.

Another thing you should make sure you have is a floor, floors are generally the easiest part of a fort to make; which sometimes makes them quite easy to over look when constructing a fort in the sky,

Finally, a fort should have (atleast) one door, doors allow you to enter/exit your fort, and also add in light.

    Optionally; you may add:
    Lights
    Teleporters
    Special FX
    Shield doors
    One-way shield doors
    Windows
    Spawn points
    Multiple floors (or "levels")

    * //Note: If your fort begins to appear saggy and uneven, go through and striaghten everything up using the objects rotaion snaps.

I hope these things help make your fort building expierence much better in the future.

I'd recommend looking at castle design for inspiration for fort defenses. Some stuff that's great to have in a fort:

An enclosed wall so that attacks are limited to their approach to the fort.
Towers which are placed at the corners of walls and extend out from them, offering firing angles covering anyone standing by the walls.
Walkways on the tops of walls which offer a nice height advantage to fire down from.
Covered walkways help against arced projectiles and air attacks.
The openings in your walls can be considered gates. Try and have windows and firing angles for defenders to be able to attack anyone trying to enter the gates. Some castles have complex defenses at their gates like moats, drawbridges, murder holes from above, etc.
Windows should be built like "arrow slits" in that they are narrow on the exterior, but open wider on the interior. This gives a greater firing angle for the defender inside, but a small target for any outside attackers.
Try building your fort on a tactically defensible location, like on top of a steep cliff or with the ocean to its back. Forts are usually built on the "high ground".
A good solid fort usually looks very heavy and sturdy. To mimic this effect try building your fort and walls so that they slope outwards slightly, making the fort appear more heavy at it's base. Adding reinforcing struts and girders can also help this.

YOU FORGOT THE ROOF HOW COULD YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your fort looks like **** and isnt lined up or anything. EDIT COORDINATES :D!
Once you do that it should be all cool. If its still not perfect use super slight movements to get them perfect to create that sexy fort.
