GIMP Noob

I just DLed GIMP, and have NO idea how to do anything. So, what should I try to start out with? I'm mostly aiming at making sigs for myself and other people. I went under the Xtns thing, and it had some pretty cool logos and buttons underneath it. Otherwise, I don't know how to do anything whatsoever.

I tried to go to the tutorials (even the beginner ones) on the site itself, and I don't understand what they are even saying.

Any help from a GIMP pro would be greatly appreciated.

Mostly the layers idea, which I have used before (I have experience in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop..and several other apps), but it just doesn't make sense.

Do you know how to add a thin border (or a tut for it)? The default filter to add one is too thick.

I tinkered with it, and here's what I did from a blank canvas. I started out with just a simple circle (I realize that the glows across the image is a simple applying of a filter...but it looked cool so I kept it)



Kind of looks like an image of the earth with the sun behind it, doesn't it?

edit: Just noticed that the rounded edges leave little unattractive corners...how do I rid the image of those?

edit2: How do I DL and get custom brushes onto gimp? I looked for how to do so but it gave me windows ones only
