Since you are new to forge I suggest you do this:

    - Make casually small maps to your liking then, edit to make them bigger, but personally just forge some infection maps first, they are simple to make, but don't make a gametype yet because they are the hardest things to balance.

    - I suggest you visit Forging 101 and 201 for Intermediate and Advanced forging tricks.

-Get used to Ghost Merging, this technique right now is the most essential technique in a forger's arsenal, it might be tricky but you'll get the hang of it. For more information, view Forging 101 on Intermediate Forging tricks, they teach you how to ghost merge.

I hope this will help you out with your forging, you started kinda late, start planning some maps for Halo Reach if you are planning to get it. Good day sir.

Not that I am an expert on map design by any means, but this is my process:

-Think of a shape, idea, piece arrangement, etc. that has not been done before or that is original. This is what makes custom games special and fun- you can play something you couldn't play anywhere else.

-Draw a basic layout, sketch of the idea. This will help you remember as you will not be able to finish it in one sitting.

-When you are making it, improvise from your original idea- it will never be the exact same as you originally planned it to be.

-Take feedback from xboxlive friends who say "I hate that, but I like that."

-Take the extra time to make things perfect. What do I mean by perfect? This is my biggest flaw, so don't look at my maps for this, except maybe 1 or 2 of em they are not "smooth" all around. That is what you want, the "smooth" comments.

To start, my first maps did not even have floating, much less interlocking or other merging. Start simple, with great ideas. Then build on it. I hate to say it but creativity is a key here. Otherwise your technique has to be far superior to anything else that is similar.

Good luck! I see a lot of new forgers out here, or at least new to the site. It will be interesting how much more community content there will be in Reach when everything is easier. Feel free to add me on XBL, just let me know you are the forge nub :). I will be happy to show you my maps, what I did and why, and to critique and give pointers for anything you make.
