I've been shopping recently for a new TV and i've found some amazing technology thats being put into some tvs. 120hz is a tech that doubles the refresh rate of the display making much smoother motion and less of a chop. does anyone have one of these tvs that they play halo on? i'd like to know what you think and whether or not the 120hz makes it have a delay (ive heard it can) Theres also tech for 240hz but its expensive and i've read in some biology books that your eye cant physically perceive it so im leaving the question on the 120hz thanks
Notice this forum section is called HALO 3 DISCUSSION. I can see you've mentioned halo 3 but the main idea for this thread is about TVs. Request move to General chat. To add to your discussion, heres an interesting article. To be honest, my little 21 inch 60hz HDTV is pretty good. I dont see why you'd need an insane refresh rate when you get the same quality on 60hz.
To be perfectly honest... I'm pretty sure xbox's can only display either 50Hz or 60Hz anyway... So buying a TV with 120Hz technology is a waste at the moment. It's like 64bit operating systems from windows. They've been out ages, and still most programs/software can't function in 64bit, so they're pretty pointless really. I'd stick with a standard 60Hz TV
This^ The amount of hz should be in comparison to the size of your TV screen, as in if you have a very large TV, 120 hz would be the best option for you. Anything after 40+ inches should be 120, if not 240 hz. Small TV's such as 15 inches towards 30 inches will be fine with 60 hz. The refresh rate is to make sure that the larger screens wont lag. BTW, if you want help with searching for TV's then I can help you if you want.
i had my doubts about the 120hz... so after doing extensive searching, and researching, and re-researching... i ended up still getting mixed results. So i brought my xbox in to a place that sold tvs (sears) and i hooked it up to a 46" samsung LED 1080p 120hz. i was blown away! the picture quality was amazing. (i currently own a 32" 1080p, so i didnt think the picture would be that much clearer) after telling the salesman how great the picture looked he said "lemme check something". He went into the picture options and the auto motion plus 120hz wasnt even turned on!! He set it to smooth and the picture immidiately looked like it was running at 100 frames per second. There was a slight delay, but no more than my current TV displays at. and my in-game performance has never been bad enough to blame it on my tv. Ive heard from many ppl who will explain the math to you about the hz and the framerate, and the refreshrate and say that it wont be an improvement because of these numbers not matching with these.. and how there is a delay behind the controls... but i played it in person and the results are absolutely phenominal. I love pc games. I actually played a LOT of halo:ce, and halo 2 on pc because of my really nice powerhouse computer able to run it at a high fps. made the game smoother and i was a more consistant player because of it. With these new TVs bringing that kind of quality to the xbox i think i'm gonna cry when i see it with Reach.. I watched a few reach videos on it and i was bedazzled. I even played a bit of halo. I am absolutely sold on the 120hz!!
Halo runs in 30 fps, so there's no reason to get a TV with a ridiculously fast refresh rate. For comparison, if you connect a Nintendo 64 console to an HD TV with 1080p, the resolution is still only going to be as good as the N64 can output. Also, tHeSoz3r, I'm sorry to tell you this but it's all in your head. Halo CAN NOT display in anything past 30 fps. 30 fps is 30 fps, and that's all there is to it. The only way you would see a difference is if your 32" TV wasn't refreshing as quickly as the 30 fps that Halo was running in, but I highly doubt that is the case. One thing to keep in mind is that large HD TVs tend to have a lot of display lag. My 22" 1080p Viewsonic has a 2ms response time, so there's no noticeable lag, but there are some TVs out there that have massive amounts of lag that is very noticeable to a frequent gamer. Instead of worrying about the refresh rate, just check the response time. Any TV with an 8ms response time or less should be fine.
60hz = refreshes the image 60 times per second 120hz = refreshes the image 120 times per second 30fps = shows 30 frames every second Therefore, content that is 30fps played on a 60hz TV will refresh each frame twice per second. 30fps shown on a 120hz TV will refresh each frame 4 times per second. Divide the hz by the fps and you get how many times each frame will be refreshed every second. The higher the hz, the smoother the image will appear.
