Okay guys, I'm having a problem!

My mums just rang up my ISP to get my (what I thought was not getting the right speed) connection fixed. We reset the router and modem etc (I do that normally anyway) and tested the connection on my sisters laptop near the router. We got a 10 meg connection straight out. I thought they must have fixed things at their end and everything was fine. I just came back up to test the speed on my laptop and I am only getting 2 meg. I am literally above the router. I brought the same laptop that got 10 meg next to the router up to my room and put it exactly were my laptop was. Surprising to me, the laptop STILL got 10 meg. The thing is, I used to get 10 meg on this laptop, it just stopped getting that a few months back. So my question is, WTF IS WRONG?
Could it be my wireless card in my laptop, if so how do I fix it?
Could it be something software side (Windows) that is killing my speed?
Or could my ISP be somehow only killing the speed of my laptop (I download a lot).

    Thanks! :)

It could be anything in your wireless capabilites overheated and then partially failed, its a common problem in '05-'08 dell laptops, but there are other possible causes. What make and model is your computor?

    Acer Aspire 5050

I did have what sounded like a fan problem on one startup a few months ago, but that was after the problem started, way after. It buzzed loudly for 5 mins then started working again. I'm normally good with this kinda thing. Also, I find something new everytime I go to my router settings LMAO, I've only just opened my NAT, god knows how good my xbox connection is now.

Lol, well there is your problem. That fan noise meant you had a problem with overheating, and acers are notorious for their fails at heatsinks. As far as i know this problem is only fixable if you have a replaceable wireless card. But yeah, ive had this problem many times before.

It works, it's just slow. If it overheated it wouldn't work at all surely. Or I would at least get some sort of error.

No, sometimes when it overheats it just partially messes around wth the hardware, causing your problem. It doesnt always cause a noticible error because the connections are weakened, not broken.

Had the same thing happen to my computer where the internet was slow. My sisters laptop worked fine. we took the computer to the computer shop and the guy took a virus (or 7) off the computer and it works fine now.

Does your ISP have bandwidth limit? You said you download a lot so this is probably the case. I have Comcast as my ISP and their bandwidth limit is 250GB a month.
