has anyone else's xbox been acting like mine? my xbox can never read any game disk, when i turn it on or put a new game disk in it will just say "open tray". it'll make this buzzing noise sometimes too which basically lets me know that it cant read it. I just bang on the top of my xbox and it will read the disc and play the game. i just recently got it back because i sent it in because i got the RRoD and it didnt do it for a while but now its doing it again. it fustrates me to no end. does anyone else have this problem? and how can i fix this?

I already know my failure (or at least I think I do). My Xbox has E74 hardware failure. Some component (I'm guessing heat sink?) overheated. I can smell it from the grid behind the console.

I'm just wondering about the cause. It is in a well-ventilated area and everything, so environmental factures should be out (plus it hasn't gotten above 80*F in my room yet). In hindsight, Ive noticed that, with this of my consoles (it was my third Xbox) in particular, when I turn it off, it doesn't actually turn it off. I know something similar happens for background downloads, but this happened all the time. I would generally just turn off the power strip to force it off, but I remember forgetting the last time I played it before it failed (there was a four hour interval for it to overheat or whatever before I went to play again.

    What do you think?

if you open your xbox you will see that there is very little space in between components so there is bad air flow, meaning it overheats very fast and sometimes randomly. (do not open because if voids the warranty)

The warranty for E74 error is three years. Although my Xbox is no longer covered by the warranty, I still won't open it.

This fix is for people who are having problems with "Open Tray" errors. This fix requires you to open your Xbox 360. So if your still under warranty don't try this.

This fix is for Phillips/Benq 6035/21 drives ONLY (Quite possibly other Phillips drives as well, must check). Pot calibration is also possible on the other 2 major Xbox 360 dvd drives, i do not own those drives to tell you how to calibrate their pots...

If your experiencing any of these symptoms then Pot tweaking can help you!
"Open tray" message whenever you put in a game
DVD drive sounds like its reading, but quickly stops
Dirty disc errors on clean discs

A POT, or potentiometer, is a type of resistor that allows you to adjust resistance on a circuit. For example, a dimmer switch for lights is a type of potentiometer. Lowering the resistance will make the light brighter, increasing resistance will make it dimmer.

    What you will need:
    Small Screwdriver
    Small flathead screwdriver
    Multimeter
    and Ultimately, patience...

For his part of the fix I will assume that you already know how to open your xbox. If you don't, there are plenty of tutorial videos on the web that can teach you how.

    1. Turn your xbox on, open the tray, unplug the power adapter. This will allow the tray to remain open.

    2. With your xbox already open, detach your DVD drive, unscrew the 4 screws under the drive, pull the bottom cover off and leave drive lying on the top so as the bottom faces you.

    3. Locate the Pot. The pot is the left screw as depicted in the following picture:

    4. Set the multimeter to 2000 omhs as depicted in the picture:

    5. Put one lead on the top of the left Pot (Top arrow) and the other lead on the bottom of the pot (Bottom arrow), you should now be getting a reading and lets say you get a reading of 1200 ohms. You will now know that 1200 is too much resistance for your DVD drive's dying laser, and you will have to lower the resistance.

    6. Now with the tiniest increments, turn the Pot counter-clockwise. Lowering the Pot too low will cause it to burn out, so be gentle. Now re-test the pot and see what the resistance it is now. The pot should not be lower than 500 ohms as this is dangerous way too little resistance and may cause a burn out. You lower in increments of 100 ohms if possible.

    7. Once you have tested, lowed resistance, and re-tested, you will now want to test a game out and see if it plays. If the game plays then that means you have successfully Pot tweaked you Xbox's dvd drive and you're now able to spend the next 22 hours of your day gaming. If the game doesn't read, don't worry, try lowering the resistance, this is where your patience will come in. Just re-test and try again. Eventually you laser will be able strong enough to read again.

It is possible to calibrate you dvd drive's pot without a multimeter, but a lot of patience and steadiness is required. I do not recommend you do this without a multimeter unless you have knowledge of electronics. I was able to do this without a multimeter because I studied electronics and computer repair for 2 years. If you are going to do this without a multimeter, PLEASE BE CAREFUL, you don't want to blow your own laser, and make sure your warranty is expired because you will rip some warranty stickers opening your xbox.

I have that exact problem but I have found simple "bandaid" solution to work around it. This may or may not work for all.
Before playing on your xbox simply leave it on for around 10 to 20 minutes to "warm up". When you come back and open/close the tray it should recognize any disk immediately.

This happened to me recently. I don't no what router I have but I just went to the xbox dashboard, went where common sense took me and then found myself in network settings. Went configure network and restore to factory defaults. Fixed it and I haven't had a problem since!

A while back, I encountered the RRoD for the first time, while I was playing Medal of Honor: Finest Hour (it is backwards compatible with the Xbox 360, BTW.) After playing for about 20 minutes, I got a "checkerboard image" on my screen, which has lots of red squares in a diagonal formation. At the exact same time, I got the RRoD and the game froze. I have also seen this happen with other backwards compatible games on other 360's.

What I am trying to say is BE CAREFUL if you play original Xbox games on your Xbox 360, EVEN IF the are backwards compatible!

Please note that my 360 has perfect ventilaion and was relatively new. I didn't see the checkerboard error on the list so I wanted to make sure it was mentioned.

Yes, unfortunately Microsoft went cheap and has a cheap set-up that could be fixed with just a few cents. =P

I would assume it does, though really really rare. I'm actually going to pick up a new XBox in 2 hours. GameStop called <333

    I'm having hard-drive problems
Game files- sometimes seem corrupted and are only corrected when i either shut off 10x or if i redownload add-ons. Fallout 3 especially and Halo Reach some maps fail to load sometimes.

If you're playing online and you fail to load maps, that has been attributed to a wonky internet connection, not particularly a bad internet connection, but something isn't set up right. (Ports not open, port triggering/ port forwarding or PPnP etc.)

Also how full is your hard drive? If it's pretty loaded down with stuff and you don't have much space left, try deleting some things like gamer pictures etc.

No i mean when i try to forge or play custom games when im the host sometimes it just happens. It could be do to faulty ports, because i found out when plug in the charge and play kit to the usb port it happens more often.

He doesn't mean USB ports, check your router's firewall settings.
