Alright, so I've been procrastinating at getting my portfolio up and running, however, here are two quick mockups and I need opinions on which one is better, what should be different... etc.

    mockup numero uno

    mockup numero DOS (personal favorite)

These are screenshots of them in browser, and I was being lazy and didn't feel like properly cropping them, there may be a small portion of my actual desktop at the bottom which looks funky, just ignore it.

Also note: These are just working colours, The actual colours will be very different.

    Opinions or feedback is appreciated.

Not sure what the content will be but I prefer the second one. The small thumbnails seems like a nice addition to spice up the home page a little. The right side bar will be useful for people to grab quick information/quick links.

They both seem a bit empty/plain (I know that the colors aren't final, but both still seem a bit... vanilla?) Of the 2 that you have above, #2 is better.

My advice/comments from a web design standpoint:
When creating a portfolio, you normally want to draw attention to your work and show off you design skills, and you want the layout to really reflect that. It might be better to have larger images of your latest work centered somewhere on-screen, perhaps in the lower area above the footer. Are you working with a particular platform, or are you building the site from scratch? If you have flexibility in the format of the site, then a conspicuous (and fancy) nav-bar at the top (you could leave it at the side, but I find that it is much harder to pull off a great sidebar) should have links to pages that contain important information such as the services you offer and the means of contacting you.

Those are just a few suggestions, I don't really know if any are useful, but hopefully they helped. I can probably give more specific feedback when I know what platform you are developing on.
