It's a unique code in the link that was generated specifically for him. He gets people to go to the link that has his ref code in it, and he gets more points or views or whatever this contest is running on. So, he tried to sneak in his ref code in the link and then advertised it as just a plain link to the contest. He didn't say anything like 'help me with this contest!'. He just tried to trick us into getting him points or whatever.
