Activision decided to fire the co-founders/game director, CEO of Infinity Ward a few weeks before they were due for large royalties on nearly no grounds whatsoever.

lol, i read the same two paragraphs twice.

and Activision fired a couple employees, so they don't have to pay them? That's bullshit. There goes any respect for Activision. We'll see how the case turns out though.

I think I heard the main reason they were fired is that Activision originally said that IW (when they bought them) would handle everything CoD on their own, and that Activision wouldn't interfere in the development process or procedure. However, now Activision is arguing that the Modern Warfare side of things is an entirely separate brand that Activision owns. Zampella and West disagreed, and that's why they were fired.

Yeah, this was what I had gathered too, also there were mentions of Activision linking the two guys to discussions with other developers as well. I don't know how spurious these supposed comments are, either in terms of whether they're true or even if Activision actually ever said anything to that effect.

Though, thinking back, it's interesting to note that the article I read didn't give nearly as heavy an emphasis to the whole bonus payout aspect, damn slippery journalists...

I was actually going to mention something about this, but decided not to because I thought it was a just a rumor. However, after EA's Chief Financial Officer commented a bit on the subject saying that he hopes there is some way Zampella and West can continue their work, it just makes me more suspicious that those two and EA aren't trying to kick things off.
