    UPDATE
So, it's been a while... but anyways, it's hinted here in an IGN article that there may be up to 24 players max.

It's not completely confirmed, but... I for one am excited :D
In a kotaku interview with Brian Jarrard, it states that there will be an increase in the number of players that can be in a game, though only a small increase.

I'm personally hoping for a 10v10 to 12v12 increase, I have a feeling it'll only be 9v9, but hey at least there's some change right?

It is at the bottom of the page, and they also talk a bit about the beta and what will be included, such as new game modes.

That interview is interesting but all the information is so broad. Ah well, not long now until the beta comes out.

10v10 would be fine, especially since the falcon is in mp it takes 5 people to fill it up. Any more than that would require dedicated servers which would be great but idk why bungie or Microsoft won't do it.

...24 players would be terrible for swat....
It's to be able to expand the friend's list capacity or whatever.

I don't think it'll be more than 18 players in a game, 9v9 is my estimate at the upgrade.

If they increase the player limit they damn well better switch to dedicated servers. 8v8 is laggy enough as it is. I couldn't imagine how bad 10v10 would be.

Why would it be 9v9? Is 18 divisible by 4? I didn't think so. I say 5 xbox hookup for 10v10.

well in any case even if it wouldnt be good for swat i want to see 12 vs 12 and a remake of containment from halo 2, that would work well together... although the map may need to be expanded a little it would be awesome.

Bungie is not switching to dedicated servers. Ever. I will agree that 8v8 gets laggy, but maybe bungie has done a thing or two to make it seem like 9v9 is 7v7.

9v9 is still even teams, and the increase in players wouldn't be anything big.

You bring up a good point though.

See, but if it went to 18, what would happen when the 5th xbox tries to log in a third person...

I don't see why they couldn't switch to dedicated servers. Battlefield handles it just fine. And then you'd remove the horrible host advantage that plagues ranked games.

They're using the same basic engine so I doubt their netcode changed much.

I don't think it's that they couldn't, but rather they don't want to.

As Mick already stated, Big Team is already laggy at 8v8. Increasing the number of players = more lag

I'm pretty sure they've done SOMETHING to make lag less of an issue. They literally gutted and rebuilt the graphics engine. They're making new gametypes and what seems to be more customization options for characters, it seems like they'd at least make the multiplayer servers better along with the graphics engine, especially with these new multiplayer options.

The biggest difficulty for the lag of Halo is splitscreen live. Call of Duty manages lag in giant games by limiting the people per xbox on live. Halo will most likely switch to 18 player games to be comparable to CoD because larger games tend to cauase a single player to be lost in the fray. The reason for killstreaks in CoD is to allow a good player to further help his team rather than being limited by normal guns no matter how skilled.
