Here in England theres a radio show called 5live and they are currently debating the greatest sporting achievement of the decade. Its a very interesting debate with some heated discussion. Seeing as its in England, many of the contenders are english sports people and sports teams and misses out any American sports so feel free to add your own suggestions. This is the full list of contenders, have a look through. My pick of the greatest sporting achievement is as follows: Lance Armstrong wins 7 consecutive Tour de France titles, including the first 6 of the decade. After recovering from life threatening cancer. Manchester United win three consecutive Premier League titles, on two separate occasions. Michael Phelps wins a record 8 gold medals at the 2008 Olympics. Roger Federer completes the career Grand Slam by the winning the French Open and then beats Pete Sampras's Grand Slam record at Wimbledon. Steve Redgrave wins his 5th Olympic gold medal at the Sydney Olympics. Winning one gold medal in 5 consecutive Olympic games whilst suffering from diabetes and a digestive disease. Tiger Woods wins his 12th major of the decade with a broken leg at the 2008 US Open. Usain Bolt wins the 100 and 200 metres at the Beijing Olympics in world record times. They decided on Usain Bolt in Beijing Olympics games. What do you think?
I don't like their choice... Micheal Phelps achievement was way more important than Usains.. Even with the whole Marijuana Controversy. "London Wins the 2012 Olympics." Wtf? why is that one of them lol?
They can't do England winning the Ashes, 'cause I seem to remember us (the Aussies) smashing them at some point 5-0... I'm not into cricket though so I can't remember exactly when it was, maybe 2007? Anyway, I don't think it should've been Man U or any other club football achievement, seeing as any club could be the best, it all depends upon how much money you have to transfer players. Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps are fair enough, but I'd have been happy with Federer or Armstrong too.
I would say Barcelona's treble, and now sextuplet. Its the only time 6 titles have been won consecutively. Right now they're probably the most dominant sports team in any sport, in the whole world. Anyways it's definitely more important than Manchester United, especially since they blow now.
Lance Armstrong. It's easier to be the fastest man in th world for only two races in the same week, but to go and do that over the most grueling course sevent times is amazing.
Clubs don't start off that way and it doesn't come down to just how much money you throw at a team, remember Greta? I know that was a one off but it still shows that its not always money that makes a team. Anyway back on topic i don't think any of the different acheivments could be declared better than one another simply because all sports are different. If I had to choose however I that lewis armstrong holds the greatest sporting acheivment.
For me its either Lance Armstrong, Roger Federer or Steve Redgrave, don't forget that Steve went through agonising ergonomic excercises everyday for 20 years to keep in shape. I don't think anyone else in history has competed in 5 seperate olypmics and won a gold medal in each.
