Here is a base for a symmetrical map I'm working on at the moment. I spent a good few hours making this and I'm hoping the map will be a great success. There will be two of these bases in the final version as well as two mini-bases right next to these, also I may replace the banshee with a hornet or transport hornet depending on what my map looks like at the end. The map will be playable for all gametypes with primarily 8-16 players. Oh and ignore the objects in the background that's just because I'm using an OLN canvas. Feedback would be appreciated, as would ideas for structures in the center or the map. Thanks guys I'll post up some more pics when I get more done. EDIT (21/12/09): Ok I've completed the sub-base and added some other aesthetics. Switched the teleporter for a gravity lift that will be improved and created the other base. Even though the sub-base is taller than the main base the main base is wider and has a bigger playing area. The reason for the sub-base being tall is because you'd be able to access it's roof from the main-base which isn't what I wanted. I like to call the sub-base the bunker, because it looks like one. All vehicles and weapons placed are subject to change after testing. Overview of the full base: Back view of the Bunker: View of window and (potential) Sniper Spawn: Ok guys again feedback would be appreciated =]
Wait, why do you have all those stacked items in the back?? JK. Anyway the base looks good so far. I like how clean it's forged. The shield doors are a nice touch as well. Are the smaller bases going to connect in anyway to the larger base? Do you have any plans for a weapon layout? Are the flag and bomb points going to be inside each base? Add some more pics when you get some more done. Looks good so far.
Questions: 1. Yes the smaller is going to connect to the larger base but not with tunnels 2. No plans for weapons yet I'll decide on that later 3. Yes, but they might be changed for better gameplay after testing
Cool man. Sounds good.. Keep us up to date with some pics and let us know how it's going. I can see this map turning out nice. Just make sure the weapons are balanced. Do you plan on money glitching the map?
I don't really know what to say about the map at the moment. Are you planning on keeping the teleporter at the top of the base or is it just for the purpose of accessing the roof for now? I can't really say what I would suggest as a center structure, but I would suggest that you extend the base and link it to another building, not because it looks bad, but because it looks boring when you see a a square building in the middle of nowhere, which is a mistake I believe alot of people make. I would also suggest that you don't try to make both bases look 'epic' because then you are normally left with a lack of money, or ideas for anything else, and the map does not seem to flow well, because you might have the sexiest looking base in the world, and then outside is a load of random small bits of cover.
Yeah I'm keeping the teleporter so you can access the roof, you can just fly there in forge lol. The sender is going to be either inside the base or just outside.
I really like the map so far, especially the plasma cannon placement, however I am not a huge fan of teleporters since these usually appear in maps as a quick fix to problematic paths. Teleporters can especially ruin gameplay since people exiting a teleporter are usually disoriented as they are upon respawning leading to teleporter camping and interruptions to gameplay. Teleporters should generally only be used between extremely distant areas of heavy cover mostly controlled by a single team. A large set of ramps to the top would probably give a smoother flow, or even a lift from mancannons. You may also want to rethink the doorway sizes on the bases since aircraft with skilled pilots could fly into the enemy base. Usually the starting bases are generally safe from vehicles.
Yeah BlazeizGod suggested that I use a gravity lift so I think that's what I'm going to do. UPDATE: Added pics of the sub-base. Feedback would be appreciated.
Looking good so far man, the base looks very clean and well made. looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
Thanks, though I have to say I'm starting to run out of room on the second sub-base. It'll be fine it just means that one team has a kind of bumpy sandbox floor.
Yeah I used you're idea for the gravity lift as well, but it's not quite finished yet. You can still reach the roof via grenade jumping but there isn't really a point because you would be cut down by Br's immediately.
Agreed. I think if you use a flying vehicle or nade to get up there, whatever. It's not going to ruin gameplay. Remember that you are going to probably want to block the lift area off with a shield door so that people don't jam mongeese in there.
Hey, I think the map looks great so far. The base with banshee looks a bit open on the inside, but I assume you're going to add to it. Other than that it looks great so far. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
The banshee is now removed and replaced with a hornet, plus the base is more or less finished now. I have added more to the inside but it kind of doesn't fit the aesthetic of the rest of the base, so I might remove it.

Can we get some pics of the lift? I want to see which ofthe few ideas you used of mine and how they turned out.
The one major thing that I think you'll want to keep in mind when forging the middle is what kind of a role you want your vehicles to have. Do you want the warthogs to be able to gun people down across the map? Do you want the vehicles to go around a sort of 'wall' in the middle? Yadda, yadda, yadda. So far it looks like your map has a 'warehouse' look to it. So I don't know if you'd want like a central warehouse with 'loading ramps' or some sort of a construction zone in the middle. Or you could go a totally different direction with the middle and blow away our minds. Other than that, it looks good so far. When I first saw the main building with the banshee, teleporter to the roof, and the sniper rifle I was like, "Blood Gulch base!!!!". Very cleanly made, and as long as that carries throughout the rest of the map you shouldn't have a problem. Don't know how much this will help, I haven't forged that much on Sandbox. Too many options for my mind to keep track of. Good luck with the rest of the map. --omelet
