Okay, Forgehub... I know there are a lot of geeks here, so care to help me out?
I know nothing about mobile phones and I am looking to purchase a new one as my current one is seriously outdated.

    I'm based in the UK.
I'd rather not have a contract.
I'd like to have IM, namely MSN.
    WiFi.
    Prefferably touchscreen.

Don't worry too much about money, I have enough but I'm not sure how much I want to spend, so please throw suggestions at me...

Basically, can you guys/gals recommend some sweet phones to me with some info?

    Thank in advance, Dthen.

In order to not have a contract it's going to have to be a pre-paid phone, just to let you know, in case you don't already know.

if you get a pre-paid phone you most likely won't get a touch one, or Im, just lettin' you know...
I would say contracts give you the best service even if they are maybe more expensive/stressful(because of monthly bills). But majority of phone users use them for a reason, they work better. I have also yet to see a touchscreen pre-paid phone.

I love my iPhone, the bill not so much. It's kind of like a mini computer witha phone built in and paid apps like WaW zombies are very fun. So if money isn't too tight try the iPhone

You definitely should check out some of the Droid phones that've been coming out lately. I'm actually posting this from my G1 Android by HTC (T-Mobile).

You can get an iPhone on pay as you go, probably your most obvious option right there. I'm on my iPhone right now and I love it.

As for the G1, my housemate has one. It's touchscreen, though for keyboard use there's a flip out qwerty. In many ways this is nicer than the iPhone on screen keyboard, being much more reliable and easy to use. But as a result the G1 is a lot bulkier than the iPhone, I dislike this aspect a lot. Whilst I prefer the iPhone OS, that's more of a personal thing than any fault with Android, which iw a great OS imo.

I dunno if the G1 is available on pre pay, though I can't imagine why it wouldn't be. Not withstanding other options, I'd suggest trying both the iPhone and G1 out in store to see which is more to your tastes.

There are good contracts for iPhone now, including one with unlimited texts and internet for £15. You need to think about how much you are around stable wifi spots, and whether you would really use the 3G, because that is the most expensive aspect of most iPhone contracts.

Between looking at maps, and just looking things up, i'd be using the internet all the time, which is why i will be soon on such a contract.

Thanks for your help so far guys.
I am willing to go on a contract, I'd just rather not, cos then I have to pay to use my phone even if I don't use it.

    What exactly is 3g?

3G is internet, but not in such a small area. like, if you are driving in a car away from buildings you will get internet.

My brother just got the Droid from Verizon, like 80% of the apps are free, a much better service provider IMO. I don't live in the UK so I'm not sure what phones and such are out, but I do know that the phone is awesome, my brother put a pattern-lock, so people can't get into your phone. Verizon is coming into 4G January, which also means the iPhone for Verizon is probably coming out then too (For those who say I'm wrong, I befriended an Verizon Worker when I was going to buy the Droid but decided not too because of this reason) My bro won't let me play with his phone so I'm not sure what other things it has, but even the Verizon guy said that all the Droid's apps are like 80% Free. If anything, wait until January if you have Verizon, for one 4G comes out, two the Droid will cost much less, and three the iPhone will (probably) be coming out then.
