When some says "This map is symmetrical/asymmetrical" I immediately think of the design of the map. But now I'm wondering, when someone says that, are they referring to the design or game play. It seems like you can have symmetrical designed maps with symmetrical game play, symmetrical designed maps with asymmetrical game play, asymmetrical designed maps with symmetrical game play and asymmetrical designed maps with asymmetrical game play. So when I submit a new map (recently had a new idea) and its asymmetrically designed but has symmetrical game play, what do I say it is? Symmetrical or asymmetrical?
You should clarify that the map itself is physically asymmetric, but the gameplay is symmetric. This way, the people downloading have a better understanding of what they're about to see. Just make it clear and you won't have to worry about people saying that you lied about your map.
Yes it's still considered asymmetrical. For instance in BoF, maps that are in the category "Best Symmetrical Objective" are being voted upon their ability to play any objective based games while being a map that is symmetrical in design.
Obviously if your map is asymmetric, you call it an asymmetric map, but you can state that gameplay is symmetrical. You even said it youreself. - - and that's perfectly acceptable. If you don't differentiate whether you're talking about design or gameplay, people instinctively think it the design, which it usually is. It's not that difficult to say what your trying to say.
wether or not it is symmetrical is based entirely off of the map geometry. A map can sometimes be symmetrical/asymmetrical if the map geometry is the same but the weapon layout is different. A good example of this is narows where both sides ofthe mapare the same but at 1 side is a overshield and at the other is an camo.
As people have said already, you say the physical symetry & then whatever gametypes it plays (we can automaticly tell from the gametype how it plays normally). MLG Paladin, the map I am making is technically symetric but it is an asymetric map (Its rotational symetry so technically it isnt symetric.) but the gameplay is totally symetric.
Originally not. Only in matchmaking. Bungie changed it during one of they're updates. Just like the maulers and flare were removed from gaurdian
An good example of Asymmetric Symmetrical is Guardian. It can play Asymmetric game types but is considered symmetrical in weapon layout and gameplay, Also the map can seem Symetric but as you can tell its an Asymetric map. Both sides of the map are not the same. I refre to my map as being an Asymetrical/Symetrical because it plays Symetric but the look/geometry of the map are Asymetrical. Well thats how i interperet this anyway.
Pictures will leave no doubt as to the symmetry of the map, the simple solution for this is to post an overview shot FIRST which should be done anyways. Unless specifically named assymetric maps are assumed to support symetric gametypes. If you say assymetric anywhere people will missinterpret it to mean it only supports assymetric gametypes.
