I have several choices of games to buy this holiday season and for next year. Now with its recent release, I want the community's opinion on this game.

    Is Borderlands worth buying?

A detailed explanation would be great.

This game looks like a lot of fun. My brother, his two friends and I bought a 4-pack on steam (PC version, although xbox seems very similar). Although it seems to me like it'll only play well if you have 2+ people to play with (but this is the case with most games now-a-days). I'm glad to have the Diablo loot generation system successfully integrated into a modern game, and an awesome looking one at that.

Shorter Version: If you have friends, yes.

I got it and it's been a blast so far. If you have a choice of one game, make it Modern Warfare 2 or ODST, but this looks to be a nice buy.

It's not mind bogglingly fantastic, it's not cinematic or moving or poignant, but the gameplay is good, and i'd imagine it would be even better if I played it online. Almost like WoW but a first person shooter.

I've never been a big fan of RPG's but I was hooked on Borderlands from the first moment I played it. It is a lot of fun with friends, but it certainly isn't lacking anything if you play solo. The FPS part of the game works really well. It's got a CoD button layout as the default, which provides the most fluid gameplay, imo. The graphics are great. And there are so many guns to choose from so you never get bored shooting up baddies. And then there's the RPG portion of this game which fits in perfectly. Sure, you have to complete mission to unlock other areas of the map, but other than that, you're in charge. You decide what mission you want to do atm, or you can just run around deading fools. The looting system is fantastic, and really makes you feel like a mercenary. I did think the vehicle mechanics could have been better, but there is literally nothing else bad about this game. If you trying to choose between games, I don't know what to tell ya. MW2 will surely have a wonderful Multiplayer, but you won't find a better campaign than Borderlands.

    I already have ODST.
Modern Warfare 2 is a sure buy from me :D

I want to buy L4D2 as well but at the same time, this game looks really promising. I just think it would be too much for all these games knowing that there are several awesome games coming out in early 2010 as well.

I personally think its definitely worth it.
As far as aesthetics go, the whole animated look similar to Crackdown is cool in my opinion. The RPG elements are wonderful. Like Shaddo said you have a lot of control over what you get to do in the game campaign-wise, which kicks ass. It does use the CoD button lay-out which is really nice. There's over 87 bazillion guns (as advertised on TV lol). But seriously there are a lot of guns. The looting system was a nice plus too.
One thing I realized while playing with my friend is that it evens out the XP earned among all the players so everyone levels up together. Like, I started playing with my friend who was already level 13. I got to level 8 before he leveled up to 14, and now I'm at 13 and he's only at 15. So it boosts you up to match your teammates which is nice so its not one guy just doing all the work constantly.
I'd definitely get this over L4D2 easy (L4D was a disappointment in my opinion), but if you only have money for one game, I'd wait for MW2 first.

I have been heavily anticipating this game since I first read about it in an issue of GamePro magazine. Reading about how it was combining aspects of both the FPS and RPG genres, I was already excited. This was over two years ago, and they had released some previews that still showed the early graphical interface they were using, not the lately introduced "cell-shaded" looking graphics. When I heard about the change, I was neither saddened nor happy. I knew they were doing what was best.

Today, the game has sold more copies than expected and has led to a shortage in some areas of the US and Canada. It received great reviews, from a 85 (OXM), 88 (IGN) and even a 93 from Game Informer. Even though I do not own this game, I can see it is doing quite well, and I will definitely be picking it up sometime soon.

I will definitely rent it. I'm tempted to just go ahead and buy it though. I wish there was a demo for it though...

Yes. A demo would be most helpful.
