Everybody else have to watch it in school today?
Every class in my school had to stop their normal schedule and broadcast the speech.

I feel like I've underestimated president Obama. He's a good speaker and he addressed many of this nations children. I think, it's awesome that he takes his time out of his day to address all of the young people about school. He trying to give direction to everyone in school. He's telling them they have the power to make a difference, they have the power to make a change. Very inspirational and if you downplay his speech I will fly to your house and make some changes to........YOU.

Yeah, I had to watch this during class, but since most websites are blocked and the T.V moniter was laggy, everyone had to go see this in the auditorium instead.

The only thing that I didn't agree with was when he was talking about how there is no excuse to not do your work / get good grades. This isn't true and is somewhat neglectful of the children who are beat and raped everyday when they get home from school. There are people with some serious problems out there and I don't know if Obama addressed that accordingly.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
I'm pretty neutral on Obama as a whole, he's taking some "meh" actions with healthcare and the economy, but when it comes down to it, I don't think McCain could've done much better.

The fact that he's making an address in a public school facility is pretty impressive though, no doubt.

I'm not sure I'm getting how that's an "excuse". Besides the fact there's multiple programs that are already established (no reason to make ANOTHER one to do the same thing again) that attempt to count that, it's not like they're spending all their time between getting beaten and raped and at school. It sounds heartless in a way, but you're talking about so little of a minority that it would hurt the speech's message and help so little that it wouldn't be worth including.

Love Obama's speeches BTW...hoping we see more from him, though.

I don't live in america so i don't know much about this and i was wondering...
Is everyone made to watch every time the president makes a speech or was this just a one off thing?

I was excited (yes I know it sounds dumb and fanboyish) for the speech just because it is of course meant to spread a good message of working hard. But because my school sucks at getting its **** together and making sensical moves, me and everyone who had 3rd lunch did not get to watch it. I'm a bit pissed that someone who wanted to watch it can't (me and other people in that lunch), but someone who doesn't want to see Obama can just send a note in.

Anyway, I heard a lot of people who were saying that Obama is just going to be political and brainwash us. lol. These same people neglected the fact that Obama's speech was already available to view on the internet, and that it has no political bias.

Personally, I think people give Obama too hard of a time. In the time he has taken office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen more than 2000 points, and although it is still far below the one time high of 14 thousand-something, it shows greater faith in the economy. At the same time, people are accusing him of being a Muslim (because it's sooooo bad to be a Muslim) and that he isn't even an American citizen (complete bullolshit).

I don't agree with him all of the time, though. For example, the initial handling of the Prof. Gates and the cop controversy. Overall though, I think Obama is a pretty cool guy. eh kills Somali pirates and doesnt afraid of anything

Most definitely a one time thing. If everyone had to watch whenever he made a speech, there wouldn't be so much controversy. And they only played it because it was about education, and he is an inspiration to some young people.

My mom could have said the same thing Obama said -.-

Not to sound like a *****, but seriously I found it passionate and it made me respect Obama a little more but like I said, my mom could have said the same thing.

He went over that in the speech, he talked about the kid with the brain tumor who is going into college and the other kids.

In my class, many kids were cracking jokes or finding unrealistic faults instead of getting the message. Sure, what the President said, anyone could say, and many have. There is no other way to present that speech, simply put. That said, providing such a "pep-talk" is not required of the President, so the fact that he took time out of his busy schedule is something really admirable. I don't agree 100% with some of Obama's political views and policies, but I do respect his social, both national and international, relations and skills.

Of some of the idiocies that escaped many of my peer's mouths, here are a couple:
"He just said to stay home if I am sick after saying that I should be at school everyday!"
"Lil-Wayne!!!!" (In response to the rap career path comment)
    "This is so cheesy."
"He makes school sound like communist China."

Frankly, I was offended. Who does Obama think he is? The welfare of our nation's children is not the business of the President. He should stay in the White House and sign bills and whatnot. If I was a father and my child were to watch this in school, I would be forced to withdraw him from school that day. This is preposterous. I don't want my President telling my child to wash his hands. That is his choice.
