There are if you read the books but they are all scattered and lost. Master chief and the marines think he is the last spartan because they believe the others are dead, when they are just lost and out of the way.

If you've read the ghosts of onyx then you would know that some of John's old team survived.

they're not scattered, the few remaining spartans (Johns old squad) are trapped on Onyx. But they are stuck there now.

There are three Spartan-II's, Linda, Kelly, and Fred, stuck in the Micro Dyson Sphere at Onyx.

There are also three Spartan-II's, designated "Gray Team", were said to have been on "fields of battle too distant to be easily recalled."

Of the Spartan-III's (Gamma Company), there are two teams that remain. There is team Katana that is stuck in the Forerunner equivalents to cryo-tubes.

Team Saber is the other remaining team. The team consists of Ash, Holly, Dante, Olivia and Mark. Of them, only Ash, Olivia and Mark are alive in the Dyson Sphere.

There are also two Spartan-III's (Beta Company) remaining, Tom and Lucy.

So, all together there are 7 remaining Spartan-II's and 10 Spartan-III's.

Out of all the Spartans, Master Chief is the only one which hasn't been reported MIA.
Plus it sounds cool and makes MC more of a unique character. "The Last Spartan". Although we know thats not true.

He is portrayed as the last one because in the games, he is. The Game canon contains no other spartans but the overall Halo canon does contain them.

Yeah, I was stumped when I started thinking about this too, but then I just figured, like everyone else here said, that everyone believes that Master Chief is the last Spartan. It's just that no one knows that the other Spartans are actually alive.

Listen, you get better sales if you say your the last one of your kind fighting for your life, rather than there are 17 of you left, fighting for your life.

But to the public, if I read correctly, every single spartan is still alive. Just on a secret mission never to ever return. AKA MIA or Dead.

Yes, to keep the morale that SPARTANs cannot die, they say they are on a top secret mission.

accually there are many spartans still out there but no one can establish radio contact or find them anywhere they recived a brief message from one it was choppy is said "...Death...much...death...-eed help" and cut out it was a female spartan. Most spartans are not dead there are a few inside covenent grounds unreachable:markvi:

See, this is why I need to read the book series. I always thought that 117 was the last one.

These kind of threads always generate so many misconceptions thanks to people spewing a bunch of bullshit. To clarify, listen to Fastforward. Everything he has said is true and the answer to your questions.
