I don't really understand how everybody claims to know the imperial system so well. I do not know a single conversion between units in the imperial system.. if you wanted to know all ofthem you would need to memorize an assload of different ratios. Metric, on the other hand, is a single ratio. There's really only a need to memorize three things: Kilo and Milli, and Centi.

    In, Ft, Yards...

    36 in = 3 Ft = 1 Yards...

I's just because we are taught the Imperial system that we know it so well.

I prefer the imperial system. I'm actually good at math and know both, the imperial is easier to see visually for me, the metric system goes from small to large to fast for me, that and the fact that I have that feet that are a foot, and the end digit of my finger is an inch, I can measure almost anything easy in imperial were I would need a ruler in metric...

See, the funny thing is that almost all schools teach metric for science, because it's infinitely easier to do calculations with.

Is there a system that works this way.

    10 inches = 1 foot
    10 feet = 1 yard
    1,000 yards = one mile

I wish it was that simple, but its not. I think America should stick with the system we have now. The metric system doesn't make sense to me. The only thing that makes sense in their system is 100 centimeters = one meter.

This is a relatively, obviously, one-sided debate...where the imperial system is just getting its ass kicked. Though, in its defense, I'll say that the imperial system is good in the sense that it keeps our kids thinking. If they don't understand it immediately, they use their heads to figure it out. Which, people thinking is a great thing.

I was going to reply to this...but I said "**** it."

How does the metric system make no sense? That's what I don't get.

I believe Metric is much easier to understand. Although, being under the Imperial system, it is easier in the since of it has been around so long.

School are beginning to teach the metric system... or at least they are in classes where it is needed and applied.

I hate right now how America is kind of right in the middle of the spectrum between Imperial and Metric. Like soda cans are 8 oz. (Imperial), but bottles are 2 liters (metric).

I personally think the metric system is a lot easier to understand. I remember somewhat struggling with the Imperial system when I was first learning it in like Kindergarten. The Metric system would be so much easier to learn for kids.

    10 mm = 1 cm
    100 cm = 1 m
    1000 m = 1 k

You just answered your own question.

the metric system is easier to understand, but the government has too much on its mind to deal with this, so it won't happen. they are too busy playing a massive game of command and conquere with our troops.(not to mention they are cheating at it by raising our taxes to gain more money, therefor and uper hand.)

and if no one wants to conform, the world should just conform to the measurements of the standard eggo waffle.

    Ok
    Im a dumb ass
I didn't look at it right.
I know it starts from Milimeters -> Centimeters -> Decimeters -> Meters -> Decameters -> HectoMeters -> Kilometers.
Those are multiplying by 10 or simply moving the decimal point. I guess it does make sense, but It would probably be harder to adapt to this metric system rather than sticking with our own.

“You Americans are so gullible. No, you won’t accept Communism outright; but we’ll keep feeding you small doses of Socialism until you will finally wake up and find that you already have Communism. We won’t have to fight you; we’ll so weaken your economy, until you fall like overripe fruit into our hands.” Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev (April 17, 1894 – September 11, 1971)

Yeah...on topic...as people before me said, you have to change everything, from food labels, to cargo labels, etc. It would take generations to fully convert to metric, but I think it won't happen anytime soon. Metric is confusing, and compared to the Imperial system, the metric involves more decimals.

the math is easier with the metric system, but will people know exsactly how far a kilometer is or a cm is or a decameter?

i know prettymuch how far an inch is by holding up my fingers, but a cm, im not to good at with my fingers. a mile, i know pretty well how far a mile is, but i would have no idea how many kilometers i went if i just started walking.

See, while the long-term effects of switching to the Metric system would be the best idea for America's economy, education, and otherwise daily life, in the short-term, we're just happy with what's working. It's the same reason why the Internet is so archaicly standardized; it would take far too much effort and energy in working to successfully implement an entirely new system overnight. It's the same reason why the majority of people use DOS derivatives rather than UNIX derivatives; DOS has become so standard in the market that even though more secure options such as Mac OS X or Linux are available, switching into a UNIX world would take too much energy and effort in switching. It's basically, "I'd rather sit in my bed and crap my pants than have to get up and walk to the bathroom." Basically how us humans go.

Speaking from precedence sports generally keep a consistent measuring system, so they wouldn't change a football field's measurements to metric. For example, in Canada we use yards for football and golf still because that's how it's always been. I think in the United States for track and field you would still use metres wouldn't you? Because the races are called 100m, 200m etc. Really it wouldn't take as much effort as everyone is complaining it would. You can measure a centimetre with the width of a finger usually rather than to the knuckle, and packaging for products changes very often, so changing one number on the label would not be a huge deal.

    12 in = 1 ft
    3 ft = 1 yr
    1 mi = 5280 ft...

there is no pattern or anything in these numbers...

    1 meter
    10 decimeter
    100 centimeters
    1000 millimeters

To everyone that is saying they understand the imperial system better, thats because you grew up learning it. Europeans grew up on the metric system, and so they think our system is hard. And in reality it is harder than metric. All you do in metric is move a decimal for length. That's not what Im worried about though. Length is easy as crap, but I think temperature, and liquid measurements will be the hardest.

Liquid measurements are easy. The beauty of the metric system is that the centimeters can be associated with the liquid measurements. A cubic decimeter (10 by 10 centimeters) equals a liter. 1000 liters equals a ton. So when something can hold a liter it is about a cubic decimeter in volume.
