Rubicon is a small slayer map that myself and Anemeros co-forged for the 2v2 throwdown.
Since we tend to focus on structure-based maps like UNSC Jade Harbor and Excalibur, we decided we should buck our own trend and try to make a space that is abundantly natural.
Of course, we couldn’t resist a bit of detailed man-made goodness, so there is an abandoned bunker in the center of the map that can be fought over as well as a crashed shuttle with debris strewn about.
The story behind this map is straightforward. A group of space marines crash landed their shuttle on this abandoned planet. Their comms are destroyed and they do not have the parts needed to repair their ship to escape the harsh, unforgiving elements. At one point humanity established a colony on this rock but have since abandoned it due to unknown complications.
The space marines who survived the crash built makeshift shelters out of their ship parts and scrap found in the entrance to the old bunker. They have been unsuccessful at operating the bunkers elevator and recently fighting has broke out between the soldiers.
Now they fight for what meager resources they have left. Instead of dying from starvation or the harsh conditions, they will all most likely die from each others hand.
We really wanted to make a small snow-laden forest map but quickly discovered the limitations of many trees in close proximity and unstable framrates. With that knowledge we decided to limit the trees and have more of a rocky terrain with sporadic trees throughout and a forest edge for part of the map boundary.
Weapon placement:
Bunker: Hydra
Bunker Courtyard: Shotgun
Bases: AR, DMR
Crashed Shuttle: Energy Sword, 2x Plasma grenade
Deer Stand: Halo 2 BR
Cargo Crates: 2x SMG, 4x Frag Grenade, 2x Magnum
The bunker has only 1 entrance (It is a bunker folks) and because this could be seen as a power play location that cannot be flanked, we placed only a Hydra. Their are no other weapons to restock your ammo. You will run out of bullets if you hold up in the bunker.
There are small cargo crates sprinkled throughout the map that fell from the shuttles stores. Various weapons can be found in them.
Shotgun and sword are pretty good at bunker defense but surprisingly well at attacking people inside too. The bunker is somewhat deep but there is no escape once you are inside. Opinions on the matter vary, but the most talented players (some who ranked Champion in January) actually prefer to stay outside the bunker and do not consider it an overpowered location.
This map is very much a slayer map. We added strongholds and CTF just for people to mess around but we do not anticipate them flowing particularly well.
