"The very fabric of this place was made by the great creators eons ago. Now the Created journey the infinite abyss like blind gods."
--BUILDING NYXIUM--The Domain- a place of vast mystery, a galaxy spanning network of 10,000,000,000 years worth of recorded history, and quite literally, the place of the most profound and critical meaning in Halo. It is the final destination of ascendance and is the true place of the "Great Journey".
I've wanted to build a Domain inspired map for a long time. Frankly, Nyxium was an accidental Forge child. What originally stemmed from a day of casually slapping down my own Forerunner assets and playing with the skybox in Forge, gradually lead to what Nyxium is now. This map isn't actually my newest work but rather something i've been slowly working with for a long, long time. I couldn't wrap my head around a cohesive playspace that really jived with satisfaction for me, until now. Throughout its development, I toiled (terribly so) with an original name to represent Cortana's current position of power and supposed ascension within the Domain. Finally, I landed on the word 'Nyx', which is Greek for 'Goddess of Night'. Suffice it to say, I'm happy with the name.
One of the biggest challenges in creating Nyxium wasn't actually the map itself, but rather supporting an actual scaled Guardian I built in a separate file as a backdrop. The atmosphere itself is dark and ethereal and churns into the endless abyss, just as the Domain is represented in Halo 5's campaign; something I was really excited to replicate. Aside from Red Team's portions of the space, the map produces blue/violet lighting to convey Cortana's dominion over this mystical realm. As many of you already know, each new map I produce for Halo 5 is wrapped in fiction to give it a firm grounding in the Halo universe, and with that being said I hope you enjoy Nyxium!
Honorable mentions to Duke of Mearl and Ryouji Gunblade in their aid of Guardian sound and animated parts.
