Hey everyone, I know it's been awhile since I've submitted a map here (there are so many new people, it's actually a bit overwhelming!) but I decided the Grifball contest was too good to pass up. Kanaloa's Wrath is one of two entries that I am submitting to the contest. The aesthetic takes heavily from Hawaiian and Aztec design and exaggerates the scale to create a monsterous ravine of a Grifball court.
Kanaloa's Wrath is different from my other court in that it strays away from the traditional design of the Halo 5 court as many famous courts have done in the past. I felt that other unusual courts in the contest had potential flaws that could hinder a player's experience, so I did my best to ensure that with any components of the formula I changed, I could back it with significant reasoning.
While most every court I've seen thus far in the contest has clear barriers and flat surfaces for the playing field, Kanaloa's Wrath features a central dip and slightly lowered catwalks on the outer rim of each team's side as well as a death pit that surrounds the court. The dip in the middle promotes focus toward the center of the map, yet brings about a hesitation to push into the ball spawn and encourages the player to think about the side routes as an alternate option. At the same time, the side routes are much more dangerous due to the four unit height difference between the rims and their interior field counterparts, as the defending team is given a height advantage that isn't normally seen in Grifball. While these traits make it harder for teams to score on the opposition, the slight increase in the size of the court accounts for any potentially lost play space on the ramps and other changes in height seen in specific areas of the court.
Thanks for checking out Kanaloa's Wrath, and for everybody participating in the contest, best wishes to you all in the weeks ahead!
Thanks to Wyvern, Colson, and Dank Skull for giving me tips throughout the building process, and for directing me on when to and when to not listen to Canadian's rambling (I mean it... actually, I take it back. THANKS FOR THE HELP BUDDY!!)
