GT: Wasoha
Map Name: FIVEWINDER
#1 bookmarked Sidewinder remake on the new Waypoint file browser. Thanks!
Description:
A remake of Halo 1's Sidewinder with a hint of H3 Avalanche and some new additions/routes. The map is made with BTB Red vs Blue team play in mind. CTF and Slayer primarily, though Strongholds, FFA and Assault are also minimally supported.
It is based primarily on the PC version of Sidewinder, meaning two-way base teleporters, rocket hogs, fuel rod guns, and the sword replacing the absent flamethrower.
Distances were timed to match the original in regard to walking and driving distances, outside of intentional changes. Sidewinder was big!
Details:
All of the most recognizable parts of Sidewinder have been replicated with care taken to retain the most important aspects of the map. Bases, tunnels, and other structures were timed to match original distances, taking player speed into consideration. It includes the original SPNKR Rocket Launcher, the Halo 1 Magnum and the Halo 2 Battle Rifle. Halo 1 was all about the pistol, so there are three available per team (6 total) for that classic feel.
Launchers have been added to the map vaguely inspired by H3 Avalanche to add new routes and opportunities. There is no longer such a steep point-of-no-return for your chosen route.
The far wall with the covenant turret has had an avalanche itself, with ice that has fallen off the wall and become cover for spartans on foot. That end of the map in general has been compressed like H3 Avalanche to eliminate some of the unnecessary extra space.
One of the biggest changes is that the top mid has been expanded into a larger battle area with lots of rocky cover, the idea coming from H2 Sanctuary. The map has generally been made more symmetrical as well, such as the bases being modeled after Blue base.
All of the original weapons are placed on the map where they should be with their respawn timers adjusted to match the H1 xbox version. New weapons have also been placed on the map to take advantage of H5's sandbox. The tank is available on the map but it set to only appear in appropriate gametypes.
(Note: The video is slightly outdated and the map has been updated in more than one way since then.)
