Centricity

Breakout

Map Description

As soon as I played Breakout for the first time I thought it would be amazing with four teams. I told everyone I would forge a four team breakout map as soon as forge came out. After a lot of putting it off and picking it up I have created a plus sign type map that is completely symmetrical.
The flag is currently suspended in the air to where you have to clamber up multiple steps in the middle of map to get there, or you have to climb all the way up the side and ground pound in.
Below the flag there is a very open camo. I dislike how Breakout maps are always putting camo in their maps, but with the openess of this camo and the amount of players, I believe it will be balanced. Below that there is a Hydra. this map hasn't seen a lot of playtests yet so changes might come.

Played this in the Forge.World Forge Friday event... we only had 8 players, so the playtest wasn't strictly representative - please take everything below with a grain of salt =)

The map played really well, even with only 8 of us, but there were two points I thought could use some change. Both of them dealt with height. First, I really wasn't a fan of the flag being suspended so high. After our first two rounds, we all wrote the flag off as inaccessible. On round 4 or 5, I was able to do some heroic clambering to reach the flag, but died immediately, as people were watching camo.

Point is, I think the flag would be better served at the bottom of your map, under camo. Centricity is a large map, and having the flag in an easily accessible location allows teams to force the end of a round in a meaningful way - placing it up high turns your map into a one-life slayer mode, and I think you end up losing some of the nuance that 4v4v4v4 Breakout can offer.

That being said, I think the center of your map is quite well designed for the 16 player multi team experience - and you definitely have an interesting idea going here. I'd like to see a playtest where you move those giant ramps down to about camo height and move the flag to the middle... The way you've designed the rest of the map, I think you'd have a very depth-y competitive experience!

Looking forward to seeing this unique idea go forward! You also might want to message @AlexVan123. He's been working on his own take on 4v4v4v4 Breakout (he calls it "Big Team Breakout =P) and you both could share your ideas on what makes one of these maps good. To my knowledge, you two are the only ones working on this sort of thing - it'd be awesome to see two people who came up with the same idea independently work together on refining it.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the input, If you watch some of the behind the scenes making of halo 5, in one of the videos they mentioned Breakout originally didn't have the flag. They ended up adding it in only because people were camping the time out to get the tie. I tried to improve on this concept to bring it back to it's original concept by making the flag only an endgame thing. The ramps are really high because they are the second option for trying to get to flag. You can ground pound on to it from the corners or even jump to the light fixture and then jump to clamber on to flag. I'd like to see a bit more how flag is used before making any drastic changes. If I do move flag down I would definitely also move those ramps down rest assured.

I would definitely be happy to talk with you, right now ACT and school obligations are kind of pinning me down, but I'll probably be on soon especially once this new update comes out.
