"This ONI information database doubles as a checkpoint for researchers heading into the Cephes Caves."
Belligerent is a map I've been working on for the last few months. Where other maps I've made have failed, this one has lasted, and been improved upon, both through the great help of my friends in the Alliance Testing Network, and the experience I've gained testing maps over and over every week. I'm happy with what it's become over that time.
The multilayered, inversely symmetrical map started with an idea; to build a map around a tall catwalk that would segment the map into two halves. In this way, the map shares similarities with 343's own Fathom, but I'd say that's where the similarities end. I didn't want a powerful, hard to access center, but at the same time I wanted it to play a more powerful role during gameplay than say, top mid on Truth.
From that idea the map slowly grew. As I was building, I knew I wanted a map that played slayer well, but it was at an early stage in development that somebody asked me about strongholds. It was then I decided to commit to asymmetrical strongholds on a symmetrical map. Today, I feel the asymmetry compliments the map surprisingly well, and makes for very interesting engagements that wouldn't be seen on the map during a slayer match.
A big issue with the map that I've been solving over the last month has been aesthetics. The original map was pretty lackluster, and I was convinced that it needed a complete overhaul. I decided that I would focus on representing one of my favorite aesthetics in all of halo: Sword Base.
My biggest goal however, has been to make the map fun and accessible to players of all skill level. I've sat down with both bronze and onyx level players and asked every question I could think of. This has allowed for a nice culmination of sweaty and casual gameplay elements, making sure the map is accessible to all players, but that high skill players can better utilize their environment.
The map's weapons and power ups include a plasma caster, an overshield, two scattershots, two storm rifles, two boltshots, two battle rifles, two light rifles, and an assortment of grenades. It features 3 distinct levels, a pleasant combination of close quarters and long range engagements, and ample jumps and clambers for sweaty players. I hope you all enjoy it!
