Mirrored symmetrical horseshoe-shaped map with an emphases on unique sightlines and fast-paced objective gameplay.
Lore:
Presented as a welcoming gift to the Unggoy when they readily joined the Covenant, the temple fell into disarray when the Prophets realized that the Grunts would have fought underneath them regardless. No reason to keep an expensive temple running, then. While one half of the grounds has grown overgrown through years of disuse, the other shows glimpses of the extravagance that graced the halls in years past.
Map Design:
Building this map was a challenge from the get-go because horseshoe shaped maps are notoriously difficult to pull off. While they often provide compelling base-to-base gunfights, they devolve into chaos when players are funneled into the few areas where map traversal is possible.
My goal in forging is to create maps that fit well within the Halo 5 sandbox but do something unique to differentiate themselves. So I set out to make a horseshoe map that works. Atonement is my best shot, and I think I succeeded (to some extent) in creating a map that provides the best of both worlds.
Right off the bat, players are presented with a mid-range gunfight and a choice to either jump bottom-mid for over shield, or traverse the treacherous back alleys to contest beam-rifle. Once they arrive at beam (the back of the horseshoe), they will find sightlines directly to either flag - a map-feature that allows for crazy last-second flag saves or assault stops. But holding out at the beam spawn can be dangerous, as there are multiple flanking routes. If you find that the other team is controlling the back half of the map, bust out your H5 movement skills and try to make the leap of faith from one base to the other - It's possible, but risky. If you get shot once while hovering, you'll plunge into the waiting jaws of the waterfall.
I have a heck of a lot of fun playing on this map, and I hope that others will too.
Many thanks to the cool folks in Alliance Testing Network, especially Duke of Mearl, Max Extra, and Xdemption for including me in their testing lobbies. Also thanks to WholeIowa for his aesthetic direction. I can't even begin to name everybody else who helped out with feedback in the testing lobbies.
