I don't understand how people will just discriminate an entire genre of music. It's just ****ing ignorant.
Because they're human beings and probably don't like the sound waves beating in some particular fashion or maybe they don't like the lack of Guitars? There are plenty of reasons why someone might not like a genre.
Personally, whenever I hear someone say they hate ALL rap or ALL country or just in general, ALL SOMETHING, I think of my friend. He doesn't like Rap music, and the minute I turn it on, he'll immediately say i'm not listening to this. He doesn't even give it a try, and it's ****ing ignorant.
I have to agree with Vinny. It is ignorant. I used to be like those people, then I started to listen to other music to try and understand why some people like it. People are being ignorant just to be ignorant, or it's not "their style." Whether it's their style or not, it doesn't mean you can't listen to it. Like a guy who's painting. Just because he sticks to one type of style, doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy other styles of painting. My point about in that, is that people are shutting themselves out from other music, just because they don't want to be shunned from what they consider the "cool people." I won't listen to anything if it sucks. So heavy metal and crap really sucks. Why? Because it's mostly not singing. It's screaming. That's not music. That's a psycological problem. Unless metal is Crossfade, or Evanescence, or anything along those lines, then I'll listen to it. Rap is fine, but it's not singing. It's reciting lyrics. I'll listen to that if the lyrics are good. Like, "I'm on a boat!"
Or maybe, here's a crazy thought, they just don't like the sound of that particular music genre? Maybe they'll listen to it if had guitars or something but maybe they just don't like how the genre sounds. I know I generally stay away from any songs with screaming because it just makes me cringe. I have no idea why but I hate those parts of songs, if they have one. And Frag, you seem to be making a different argument completely.
Ammendment: Unless you just don't like a particular genre. Wether it be because you prefer listening to guitar solos or whatever. It is ignorant to say that all rap is singing about drugs, gangs and hos, though.
You obviously think that both of the paragraphs are relating to the same subject. They're not. And if you still think that I'm off subject, you're an idiot. Because I'm talking about how people are being ignorant to genres of music.
I never said they were of the same subject. Doesn't change that both don't have anything to do with what I was saying. I said people don't like certain types of music because the sound waves don't agree with what they envision to be a good tune. Your first paragraph goes on about how people should try other genres of music and the only reason that's stopping them is social barriers. Your next paragraph goes on about how people tend to downplay the talent involved in whatever genre by trying to further whatever that genre is from actual singing, or whatever. I agreed with this paragraph mostly. BTW, your analogy of the painter looking at other styles of art is... off. A better analogy would have been that a person who enjoys abstract paintings shouldn't just ignore the other styles. Still doesn't mean that they are going to enjoy looking at other styles of paintings. I like the way you imediatly went to the name-calling. Real classy.

You've completely missed the point of it. And yes, what holds back MOST people from listening to other genres, is socialism. Then the fact that they automaticall assume music sucks because it doesn't sound like the music they are so comfortable to there music. They won't adjust, and they treat their music like their religion.

Some people could just not like the few similarities that all rap songs have or all rock songs have.
