I don't understand it. I've tried a hundred times to make a good map. I for some reason can't do it. I've tried with music, friends, alone, etc. is there ANY tip or way to help me? My favorite types of games to make are well just Infection and Eye-Candy maps. I have Sandbox and Foundry and I know how to interlock objects. Tips would greatly be appreciated.
Persistence is the biggest thing, in my opinion. I remember when I was just too lazy to interlock stuff, because I was like "nahh its no big deal, its barely noticeable anyways, and who really cares?" I've come a long way from that, and in that long journey, my forging skill has increased to the tenth power. I can spend hours just trying to perfect that one geo merge or interlock.. because in the end, I'm that much happier. I've been forging since day one, and I'll tell you, perseverance will get you far. Try to look at other people's maps for inspiration. You don't always have to build an entire map. Start slow and minimal. Build some cool structures on maps, and if you don't like it - scrap it and start something new. You're better off forging something you like then continuing to work on something that has no fruitful results. Although its a hassle, and although you might be constrained by time, I always find it worth it just to make my maps just that much better.. in every area. Persistence is the big thing. Especially in the finishing stages of a map. You can't just plop around weapons, spawns and equipment. Use some logic, figure out how players are going to play. One great thing that improves maps in the finishing stage that I like to do is save films of testing. Once the film is saved, hop into theater mode and check out how people play. At any moment, could you tell if someone was lost, or if they were looking for a BR, or even an enemy to kill? Or were they busy shooting through cracks in the floor? Did they retrack their steps because they noticed a huge bump in the floor? Are they having trouble completing the objective (essentially balance)? All these things need to be taking into account. You don't have to do it overnight. Certainly don't rush yourself. Perseverance is key, and with perseverance (and some confidence) you will be able to make what you've always wanted. Hope I helped
That really helped a lot. Thanks man Yeah, I'm still at the time where I think that where something is interlocked a bit off, no one will notice. I think next time in Forge I'll try something new. Thanks aMoeba.
Try to design your maps on paper first. Think about flow, weapons, lines of sight, etc. instead of pretty structures, then add your aesthetics after you have the way the map will play first.
I actually prefer paper because you can figure out flow and balance. Details make it alot harder to perfect them. After that, Sketchup is good for deciding how everything should look.
I'd like to sketch it out and stuff but... A. I never know what I want to make on Forge, I just never have had any actual Ideas of making a map. I've tried looking at others but I just admire and can never gather ideas. B. I suck at drawing. o_o <-- LOL
Well if you can't come up with any ideas at all, and you couldn't draw out said ideas anyway... Maybe you could co-forge with somebody, and they come up with the plan? I mean if you have the ability to forge their idea out right.
I surprisingly made an infection map that I do like but the Zombie Spawn and rest of map needs a little help, but the Humans part I really like. I've tried to Co-Forge, but then I feel like I never do anything and it makes me feel well, bad. =[ I think I'm just screwed. T_T
Start on crappy maps, work your way up to almost non-crappy maps. Just keep practicing, if you have to build something a hundred times to build it well that means you build the damn thing one hundred and one times.
