Ok, so we are talking about Japan in my Global Studies class and something intrigued me. The teacher told us about conformity in Japan and how you could be killed for not conforming. He then compared it to in the US how if you were to go for a job interview, you might be declined a job if you had long hair, were not dressed appropriately, or had tatoos. He then explained how he used to be a job interveiwer, and the 3 things you were not allowed to discriminate against were 1) Race 2) Sex and 3) Religion (sexuality is now one of them I think, but I am not sure about that). The thing that striked me about this is that religion can be extremely relevant to work, and is a significant factor about a person. Now before I say this, let me say that this is not my personal view, but I valid argument that I am proposing:

A man has worked for a long time and has finally made enough money to start his own business. This business just happens to be a restaurant, and employees there have to interact with the customers. This man also happens to be an atheist. Now, he decides that he does not want to hire any religious people, under the grounds that "If you are delusional enough to believe in a magic man in the sky, then I don't want you working for me".

Now, this may be somewhat close-minded and offensive, but I believe that in a capitalist society, he should be able to hire employees under these circumstances. It is HIS business after all, and even though nobody would probably want to work for him, it is still a valid point.

Another example of this could be a Christian boy who was a complete straight arrow and clean cut, for some odd reason decides he wants to work at a place like Hot Topic/Spencer's. Now, even though it is illegal for them to discriminate against his religion, they could still say he doesn't fit the job profile. However, I don't think we should beat around the bush in America, or any democratic capitalist society. They should be able to not hire him simply because they do not want extreme christians working at Hot Topic.

Also, please do not argue about the existence of a god, or the credibility of a religion, for that, go here. This thread is strictly about religion as it corresponds to job interviews.

I believe there is a law in which privately owned businesses can hire on whatever grounds that they choose.

Corporate businesses however, must follow the "No Discrimination Rule."

Well if you think Job discrimination doesn't happen you are wrong. People can completely not hire someone based on religion/sex/sexuality/race...

however they cant SAY that. They can find another flaw. It's basically a big ass loophole, but if, and this is hypothetical and I would never, but lets say I open a business and a christian applies and I see he is Christian. I can not want to hire him for that reason, but maybe I'll say, "You lack the experience" or whatever other reason I want to make sure he isn't hired. Obviously, if you are caught you will be arrested or fined or whatever, but the point is that the flaw in saying you can't discriminate is that people completely can, as long as the reason they give is valid.

I am not sure about that, but my teacher told me that it went for all american businesses. I have learned to not believe everything I am told in school though. Even if so, it should not restrict corporate companies either.

Thats what I am saying. People should not have to try and find loopholes. They should be able to not hire you simply because of your religion, because is is an EXTREMELY signifigant factor.

I don't think people should fire others for Christianity or any religion regardless. I mean if you're going to fire/ not accept somebody don't do it for their religion. Find another reason. The only condition is if you had, say, a Christian church, I wouldn't find it bad to not accept an atheist for a job there.

Exactly, that is an example of how this point can work for both sides. And my point is we SHOULDNT HAVE to find another reason.

Well then hire them and if their religion gets in the way of work fire them. Quite simple.

But a Christian really won't affect anything, a Muslim can, but even then... I don't see how religion can greatly affect the industry of the business. So a Muslim takes a five minute break to pray... Your business is not going to crash because of that, also take into account that most religion rarely interferes with a job, my dad is christian, he works as Construction Engineer... He supervised the construction of a Muslim Mosque and he did not tamper with it so it would collapse to kill the Muslims... So really I don't get the point of this discussion

EDIT: I have never typed this bad... XD

Because you should be able to not hire someone on the grounds that they are delusional for being religious.

Then that's just being a hypocrite, one because Atheists can not prove that they are the ones being delusional for not believing in God .

But, on topic. Like I said, religion does not make you delusional and does not affect how a person works, would an Atheist hire an Atheist man with a 3.0 GPA who went to a modern college or a Christian man with a 3.5 GPA and went to a prestigious college. I'm christian and I have a 3.0 GPA I am not delusional nor am I crazy because of my Religion. So that said we can assume that the Atheist man who is hiring men is ignorant, or a hypocrite.

Believing in a man from the sky, a man rising from the dead, turning water to wine, feasting on mans flesh in the form of food, a virgin can become pregnant with a child that is also the father, naked people eating apples that a snake told them to eat is why I have to take a bath in oil and go to church, the earth being created in 6 days, the moon having it's own light source, and a single man gathering one male and one female of every animal on earth could all be seen as somewhat delusional. There are MANY more, but these are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

yes, but how does this affect a man working in a job, is he really randomly going to try to force religion on his attendees. It's just ignorance to believe that that is what Christians or anyone from any religion do... If I were to work, I would not just go to people and tell them to believe in God, as long as they don't tell me to disbelief in God I would not really care if they are Atheist or not. It's just your assumption that that is what Religious people do, when it's not.

Nobody wants someone who is delusional to work for them. Would you hire someone (as a christian) who belived in a flying spaghetti monster who followed him around urging him to eat more spaghetti?

Of course not, but why would he do that? Or act as if though he does. A christian won't go to work and start babbling that there is a God, and tell others not to sin, you are assuming that they would, and it's just making you look more and more ignorant in my eyes, you don't see that we as humans still act like humans. We are not going to carry our bibles to work and start preaching to everyone...

I am not saying that they are going to, but JUST THE FACT that they believe something so farfetch'd, and dedicate there lives to it, is a reason to question their character. Which is reason to not want to hire somebody

Yes, but refusing them because they believe in something far fetched at home or at church is not a reasonable reason to assume that this man is insane, especially when he does not attempt to spread it to others. If anything you can then fire this man, but if he does not then he will work the same as an atheist, not because "god" told him too, but because he has a family to feed.

Nobody said anything about sex discrimination. Not hiring somebody because they are delusional is a legitimate argument. Would you hire somebody who had a disease that made them feel like they are on acid all of the time? I am not saying religious people are delusional, but it is easily arguable that they are. Please get acquainted with my argument before you post ITT

If someone had schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder and deliberately denied themselves treatment then you'd be well within you're rights to deny them a job. The problem is, its not know whether they'd be a treatment (as in pills) for the delusions caused by theism, as there is with mental disorders. Religious belief is much more subtle, whereas a full fledged mental illness such as schizophrenia has causes, such as low brain oxygenation at birth or hereditary predisposition, and physical symptoms, such as hallucinations. You could almost say religion attracts the mentally disturbed, or that likewise, the mentally disturbed are drawn to religion.

Employers should be able to choose to discriminate based on religion. It's an indicator of the person's ability to grasp ideas and understand concepts, as atheism is usually indicative of a better handle on scientific idea's. Pretty actors/ models get hired over ugly actors/ models. An employer should be able to choose who they feel will be able to carry out the job to the best degree as decided by them.
