I've been thinking about this map for quite a while now... about one year to be exact. I actually made an unreleased version of this map back on Standoff, which happened to fail miserably. It only had about 3 seconds of free fall time, and was too crude in my opinion. So after that miserable take on the idea, I decided to wait for the perfect situation. And then I found Sandbox. I remembered seeing a map, which allowed players to leave the sky bubble’s boundaries, and I almost automatically thought of that same free falling map I made about a year ago. So after about two weeks, here I am. It’s here, and it’s better than ever. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Skydive ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By ER1C0 "Mid-air fighting at it's very best" _______ Misc.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Random Fact: This is my first Sandbox map! Base: Sandbox Supported Gametypes: Custom Gametype(s) Forging 101: [ YES ] __Floating Objects [ YES ] __Effective Spawn Placement [ YES ] __Interlocking Objects Please keep in mind; I wanted this map to be glitch free, so I decided to cut down on the aesthetics, seeing as Sandbox already has amazing aesthetical features. However, you won't be disappointed, heck, you haven't even seen the pictures! _______________ Description~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The idea involves, "sky diving", as you may have guessed. This map is about fighting in mid-air. Yeah, I know, you probably just fell off your seat from that crazy description, so to follow protocol, here’s the, “long version” as some might say it. ________________________________________________ The Long Ver...The Official Description~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Map ~ Players start off on top of the entire map. That means on the top of the sky bubble. They fall slowly, due to the enablement of high gravity used in the gametype, and fall about 8 ½ seconds before hitting teleporters at the bottom of the middle ground (I would have made the teleporters at the bottom of the crypt… if it were possible). And so they teleport back to the top of the map. Here is where it gets kind of technical (at least for you inexperienced forgers). Bungie made it so that if you hit the teleporter at high speeds, you exit the teleporter at high speeds. However, you have to face the teleporter a certain way in order to angle the player at an appropriate position. So I placed 8 receiver nodes facing up towards a wall. Thus causing the player to hit the wall and go back to falling at normal speed. There’s also a way to gain speed on the opponent, but I’ll explain that later. Also, the laser guardians will shoot you (and will very occasionally kill you) when you hit the top of the middle ground’s barrier (did that make sense?). This is where it gets a little more technical (again, only for you inexperienced forgers). I made another wall, which prevents players from getting hit by the laser. This wall is about one double block’s length tall. I made the wall where the majority of players would die from the guardian laser. On the opposite side of the wall, I created a large blockade… thing so that you can’t hide behind the wall. So initially players can’t do anything besides fall, kill and die… Okay, well just comment or pm me if you have any questions. The Game ~ This won't be as long... It's a free for all Slayer match up to 15 kills. So, each player has one sword and low gravity. There are three magical orbs... also known as powerups. Active Camo. - Respawns in 180 seconds Overshield - Respawns in 180 seconds Custom Powerup (please read!) - Created to force respawn, which makes this powerup respawn right away. This nifty little orb (when used with the gametype) makes the player heavier. So when someone picks this up, they will fall faster and hopefully "sneak up" and kill someone. Anybody can pick it up at any time (unless somehow two people fall sided by side and both land on the powerup at the same exact time... which is rather unlikely, seeing as the objective is to KILL the enemy). This effect lasts 30 seconds. So there isn't much more to it than that. Again, just reply or pm me if you have any questions. Moving on… This map includes: Interlocking 3 magical orbs (1 active camo, 1 overshield and 1 custom powerup) 8 1/2 seconds of mid-air madness!!! It's really hard to explain... I'd recommend that you go straight to the visuals from here... oh wait, the visuals are next! __________ Visuals~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnbEtKiWjZo This is a very serious and amazing video. It took about a daysworth of setting up and capturing (thanks to B.nets new handy dandy notebook capturing mechanism). So really, check it out. ..And now... Pictures! (they're from the video, so it's either you see these or watch the video... WHICH includes video clips and music may I add) Map Overview There isn't a tank in the map. It's just used to show distance. Again, the tank isn't there, it's just used in these pictures to show distance. The top of the map You can see the three powerups here You can see the wall in this picture. You will die if you don't make it into one of those teleporters... Mid-air Madness!!! ______________ Download~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Download Skydive (the map) Download Mid-air Swords (the gametype) Thanks for takin' a look! EDIT 1: The reason I made only one gametype is because swords was the best and one of the only gametypes that could be used for this map. See, when you fall, you can't look directly down, instead your player looks at about a 10° angle. So players can't shoot directly down, and it's not much fun when all you can do is shoot someone who's right next to you... However, I figured swords were better because they were made for close combat. Also, sometimes your player's feet get in the way when looking downwards.. So I'll say this now, It's best to play as a Spartan. The Spartan's feet are smaller and don't take up as much room as the Elite's feet do. It's kind of like SWAT, where the Elite is a bit better to use than the Spartan is (because of it's low head)... This time it's the Spartans that are better (I know, woot woot for us Spartan people!)... ER1C0 out.
What if 2 players were somehow falling at different times caused by respawn time. it would be difficult to get close enough to the player to attack with sword. To resolve this, add in a longer range wep like BR or carbine. Otherwise, a unique idea you've come up with here.
Sorry to sound like a jerk, but you didn't read all of it. There is a unique way, and it's called the custom powerup. I will quote directly from my previous post: Thanks for the question EDIT: I went back and edited it so people will see the custom powerup part better.
Yes, but you won't always land on the power up, will you? And besides, in a larger game you might still want to attack someone higher/lower than you, as you've already killed everyone around yourself. Also what is the disparity in fall time, when falling with custom powerup and without?
You can move while you are in mid-air. With the custom power up you fall 6 1/2 seconds Without the custom power up you fall 8 1/2 seconds ...so about 2 seconds. The custom powerup lasts for 30 seconds btw.
This is a very original idea. I love how you have to fight in mid-air. You executed this map very well. I would suggest making a snipers varient of this map. That would definetly change things up a bit. You would have to have a fast sensitivity though because if your looking up you'd have to look down once you go through the teleporter. Good job though.
Not sure if this would happen, but if the power up respawns right away, the chaser gets it then goes back up, but the person being chased could just get the power up the next time, and they would keep falling at the same speed as the chaser. When the power up wears off they will move away from the chaser again, so they will never be caught if they continue this cycle of picking up the power up each time it runs out. If that does happen it might be better to change the power up to respawn every 10 or 20 seconds, so this would never happen. Don't know if that made sense.
You know I was going to do a map like this, but with battle rifles. And I was going to make it so that you die when you hit the ground either way. Unfortunately, I didn't know how to make it so that you fell for that long. It's also well-executed. Congratulations. The aesthetics are decent as well
Yes, but the point of the game is to kill each other. You can do this in normal slayer as well. Just hide in the corner of a map and never attack the enemy... But if you REALLY wanted to catch up you could just try landing outside the teleporters and die by the guardian towers, then hope you spawn next to the guy (You don't lose points when you die from the guardians). It's really just an overall honor rule that's been present since Halo: CE. Don't sit in the corner and hide, the point is to kill, or get the flag, or go the hill, etc...
What if i was Scared of High places....then what? ya. you should of thought about that before you went and ruined my dreams....
I played a 1v1 game, just to get the fell of the map, I have a couple of suggestions. 1# put spawn points at different levels, not just the very top 2# put a heck of a lot more of those custom powerups everywhere. In mid air , covering a whole side of the bowl ect. 3# I would try this with sword and hammer starts, our bruteshots, and put some power weapons in midair to get, (laser, sniper, fuel rod.)
I actually made the map with all sorts of weapons, but found out that you couldn't look down all the way... so I erased it... I think this is more of a custom weapons kind of map because I wanted people to have variety... so if they wanted to play swords then they could play it without worrying about other weapons being on the map ... idk it's just how I made it, penguin assasin. that might seem like an unclear response, but I'm tired right now.
This map is awesome. I was forging something similar like this, but on the main floor of sandbox and with the skybubble barrior restricting the fall, unfortunally I got fed up with things. But you seem to have made an awesome map out of it (haven't DL'd yet). I now have the will to start working on the map I was making earlier, it would be very different from yours; I was thinking about capture the flag in mid-air (I figured it could be done) and airplanes as bases. Is it ok with you if I make this map, and if so, could I use your map to determine the place where to start building my map?
Yes, but please don't use the objects from my map in your map (i.e. don't download and use everything I have in my map and claim it's yours). Just use the premade objects from my map for alignment not for the actual map. I hope you can understand that...
Yes I do understand. I wasn't planning on using your objects for my map, since my map will be different than yours (2 teams opposing eachother), I really like the idea of placing the teleporters upwards, and I will have to use (steal) that idea to make a good map (You will get credit). There are also some things in the gametype that I really have to steal, like the low gravity and I will probably also use swords and some power weapon like rockets, since I also am going to make a platform in the middle somewhere to go to the opposing team's 'fall area'. I will give you credit and also maybe an link to this thread, like 'There is also another freefall/skydive map, made by ER1C0, you can find it HERE, credit for thinking of falling past the skybubble, using swords, and return-to-top system (the teles that are facing upwards, so you slam into the blocks) all goes to ER1C0' Or something like that.
Yes, I certainly will send it to you, but it could be long before it comes out, since I am somewhat busy right now.
