Before you jump all over me, this is not a debate regarding the morality of the death penalty. While this is mostly based on personal preference, it can also be an ethical debate, depending on how each person looks at the issue.

Please give good, logical explanations when you state your side. This could be so you feel safer and more secure, to exact vengeance, or any other reason.

A serious criminal act (rape, homicide, assault, etc.) in which you, a friend, or a family member has fallen victim has drastically affected your life. The crime is certainly serious enough to warrant disciplinary action to the fullest extent of the law.

Would you rather have the criminal's life ended by means of the death penalty, or would you rather have him spend the rest of his life in prison?

Sorry I just woke up, my comprehension is down. I would make that sucker take the death penalty, just so I can watch him die!

No, this is if YOU could choose which sentence the CRIMINAL got. Not which sentence you would prefer to serve...

    Read.

I'd choose for the criminal to serve a life sentence. I would feel very bad after knowing i had sentenced a man to death, even if he deserved it. Also, it gives the man a chance to realize what he's done to the family (if applicable), and feel guilty for his mistakes.

The death penalty would serve as a better deterrant for criminals, so it is good on that part. However, the ethical implications of ending somebody's life is something that is harder to decide. Even if somebody ended another person's life, should they deserve to have the same sentence.

As inhumane as it sounds, I want the DP back. It seems life sentences aren't long enough anoymore, with people getting out for good behaviour, maybe even killing again.

I am well aware of the rules.

While this is mostly based on personal preference, it can also be an ethical debate, depending on how each person looks at the issue.

I'd rather have this thread slightly bend the rules in this forum than be completely ****ed up in Off Topic, which it inevitably would. But I don't even really think this thread breaks the rules.

I would like to have a civilized discussion/debate on this matter.

    I'd ask them.
    Personally, I'd choose death.

Rot in prison. Death is quick and painless, life imprisonment is a much harsher sentence.

For life sentece convicts, I fully support the death penalty. My tax dollars should absolutely not be providing room and board to murderers for as long as they can manage to stay alive.

I understand arguments that killing is wrong, but by placing someone in prison without any way out for the rest of their life, you're killing him anyway. He'll never reproduce again, so he's effectively genetically dead. He'll never walk outside of a prison again, so he's socially dead. And he'll never produce any benefit to society again, so he's economically dead. All that's left is to make him biologically dead so that we don't have to feed him anymore.

None of the above. I agree with punishments but not like sentences or death penalties. God decides our fate, not people.

I think I would go for the life sentence and here is my reason. Say a criminal kills somebody and it is up to you to determine whether or not they live. If you chose the death sentence for that criminal then you are no better than that criminal by doing the same thing they did(ending someone's life just like what they did). So by using your decision and reasoning for the death penalty you are subject for the death penalty yourself. I just can't stoop to that level and btw their is no rational reason for ending someone's life, it's just a senseless action.

Well i have talked about this alot and i have to go with life sentence.

One thing is religion, i am aethiest so i dont believe in heaven but if their was a heaven then wouldn't they be on death row for 7 years then go to an amazing place?
Now i no to go to heaven you wouldn't if you killed someone. but it is possible if there was one because i dont have a theory on death.

Another thing is that they kill you in your sleep or put you to sleep. so then you are on death row for 7 years then it ends! THE END. he doesnt know he died and he doesnt have the terror of being tourchered by the thought of Omg i r gonna diez lolz. As a forgehubber would say.
So basicly the end of death row is the end of your punishment.

    THE END
PS. i said the end 3 timez!

You see the problem is, The people who do the most violent acts, it doesn't matter if you kill them their crazy. A better punishment would be jail for life in solitary confinement, but the best would be to sit them in a room and let them die. Just don't give them anything.

although the death penalty is a good way to try to keep the population in check.

I don't see why people are so concerned with what happens to a person who has been judged by a jury of his peers in a court of law, and has been found guilty of crimes so bad that he must never be allowed to walk among innocent people again.

Look at it this way, what happens to him is a moot point, whether you believe in an afterlife or divine judgment or not, because we should be doing what is best for EVERYONE ELSE except for him. And what is best for everyone else is to never be exposed to that man again, and to not have to pay with their tax dollars to keep him fed and guarded and provided medical care until he dies of natural causes.

If you believe in heaven and hell, send him to be judged by the divine, and if you don't just get rid of the human garbage that he is as you would radioactive waste.

To keep with the trash metaphor, prisons should be recycling plants, where people who commit crimes can pay their penance and hopefully learn to be useful members of society again. Prisons should not act as expensive landfills, where we throw our trash, and pay to keep it fed.

I'm not waiting for God to decide the fate of someone. Because there is no God.

Anyways, you know a life sentence is actually cheaper than the death penalty, right? Just pointing that out.

I've never been the victim of a crime that would warrant either, so I have no idea how I would feel. My problem isn't the morality of the death sentence, it would be about what I felt was most justified. For me personally, I would say the death sentence. If I knew they were the criminal, and I wanted justice, that would be it. But from a judge's (or jury's) point of view, I don't know. It's tricky. I guess all you can hope is that you never get put in this position.

I'd rather have them die just because once they finish their life term they have either gone fully insane and put into a mental institution, or they became so mentally ill that they snap their own neck. I would'nt want to know that I caused that. If it was me I would rather serve a life term because I could convince the guards to let me out with my supa seckxyness!!!!!
