Every 45-60 minutes I get the message "Disconnected from Xbox Live" and everyone around me dies (if I'm in an online match). So far it's only happened on Halo 3, but I have my suspicions that it'll happen on other games too. It instantly reconnects after I try to reconnect, but once when I tested the connection it said I had dodgy MTU settings. I spent half an hour configuring them to 1492 to no avail. I still get disconnected and it's getting really frustrating. Halp?

Along with this, the guide menu is really slow and often freezes. 9 times out of 10 I get presented with the error message shown below. Everything I do takes a second attempt to do it (e.g. sending and receiving messages, joining games and parties, even signing in controllers). Xbox Live and NXE is completely ****ed for me. Any help would really be appreciated.

EDIT: These problems with the guide are coming thick and fast, so I'm going to list them here:

    - Xbox live randomly disconnects
    - Messages sometimes get marked as unread after I've read them
    - It takes 30 seconds to 1 minute to send messages and invites
    - The dashboard often freezes up to the point where I have to disconnect and reconnect the controller the resolve the issue...
    - ...After doing this, it says "Please reconnect controller" even though the controller is connected
    - Everything that involves accessing servers takes 5 times longer than usual
    - I often get the error message pictured above
    - I can't veto maps in Halo 3's MM (I usually get 1 second to veto, if at all)
    - I can't party up in Halo 3 without lagging out or Xbox Live disconnecting
    - If I'm idle for more than 10 minutes (i.e. not using anything online e.g. when I'm alone in Forge) I get disconnected from Xbox Live
    - When I'm in a party it sometimes says "... has left party" for everyone in the party in succession, leaving just me in the party
    - My connection in Halo 3 online is now almost always yellow

    Try re-installing NXE?

    What router do you have?

I have a D-Link router. It's relatively new, but it works on Wireless B. How do I reinstall NXE?

I'm not really a professional at discovering networking problems like the one at hand, but are your ports open? I'm not sure if that is the case, but many people have complained that this occurrence, and others like it, are due to the host-computer having closed ports, ending in errors, and shut-offs. If that doesn't work, try calling 1-800-4-MY-XBOX. They always seem to diagnose the problem sufficiently, though not quickly. Expect to be on the phone for a quite a while, deeming this is a complex matter. Good luck.

Type either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.103 into your web browsers address bar.
If it asks for username/password type admin for the user and leave the password blank.
If you cant log in, try admin as both the user and the password.
Note: You may have changed this for security reasons before.

Once in, look for advanced setting/wireless settings and then find Port Forwarding.
You need to type in as follows into the Port Forwarding settings..

    Name - XboxLive3601
IP Address - Use your default IP. (can be found by opening 'Run', typing in cmd and then typing ipconfig /all)
    Start - 88
    End - 88
Type - Both (if Both isn't available, create two, one for TCP and one for UDP)

    Name - XboxLive3602
    IP Address - (look above)
    Start - 3074
    End - 3074
    Type - Both

If this doesn't solve your problem, your internet modem may also be the problem.
Access your modems configuration (can be anything, contact your ISP) and do the same as you did for the router.

Hope this helps. If not.. sorry. =)

Okay so what are the side effects of opening my ports? I've already reconfigured my MTU to 2492 btw. But the guide is really REALLY slow, along with Halo 3 (loading maps and connecting to servers when viewing file shares etc.) and often freezes or gives me that error message. I still think it's due to NXE being buggered or my connection being bad.

Have you called 1-800-4-MY-XBOX yet? Use it as a last resort I presume, but they always seem to eventually diagnose the problem at hand.

Not yet. I sent them an error report at xbox.xom/support, but they messaged back recommending I sit on the phone for several hours to some guy on the other side of the world who has to stick to a script so I won't get anywhere at the end of it all... Good idea!

You can suggest to be transferred to a more local agent, you know? I prefer to talk to Australians seeing they're more lenient on the phone, and more reliable to talk to. Are you certain that script will not accommodate you? Why ignore it, just give it a shot.

The problem is now becoming very inconsistent. I thought it had gone away this morning but tonight it's ****ed up again.
But I'm going back round my Dad's again tomorrow night. If the problems persist there then i know it's not my Mum's internet connecction...

Is the problem occuring after the 360 has been on a while? It sounds like your 360 is having a problem, not your network connection. There might be a way to reset or redownload the update, but I'm thinking its a hardware issue. How old is your system?

The update has killed many xbox 360's, yours could be on its way out, sadly.

It seems to occur after I've had it on before in the day, not necessarily if I've had it on for a long while. And yeah, I've had my 360 since November 2007. And I move it around every week...
How long does it take to get repaired? I know how to fix everything except the red lights without going inside the console

I doubt Microsoft will fix it in its current state... you're probably going to have to wait until more problems manifest. It sounds like your system isn't too far away from getting RRoD.

    I dunno.

I took it round my Dad's, and all was well until I had my map tested with the Guild members yesterday. I got disconnected again during testing. Damn. But I haven't had any of the guide problems round my Dad's. Weird, huh?

I've been having the same problems over the past few days. A couple times a day I get suddenly disconnected and need to restart my xbox to connect again. The dash runs slowly on some occasions.
This same thing has been happening to two other friends of mine- I think that it may be a serverside problem. I'm going to wait it out and see if it doesn't fix itself in the next few days.
If you want to try everything, I had problems a few months ago where my dash would run slowly, if at all. I cleared my cache and deleted any games I had set to run off my HDD instead of my disk, and the problems cleared up.

Very helpful, thanks a lot. I'm still getting randomly disconnected, but the dashboard is no longer lagging. I already cleared the cache though, to little effect. But I deleted Halo 3 from my HDD and got rid of the Halo wars demo and it's normal again now (except from the disconnecting). Thanks Rabid, you've saved me the trouble of sending it away or reinstalling NXE!
