T3: If Sandbox is the successor to Foundry, what improvements or changes have you made to give people more ways to create new maps?

Lars Bakken: Well, Forge itself didn’t see any changes, but the amount of objects you have at your disposal is pretty ridiculous. We added a few new goodies specifically to Sandbox as well. On top of the screen effect filters (which are back) [you can also check them out in the screenshots – T3], there are now a couple dynamic lights to throw around. There is also a new fun object we lovingly call the “Kill Ball.” It basically lets you set up areas where anything that enters it, will be killed. That should offer some fun new possibilities for players and map designers.

Got this off of the interview. "Kill Ball." It's what we've all been waiting for.

Ah, wouldn't that be cool if they used that one way glass they were talking about in those windows...
    =]
Just asking, is that type of glass in Assembly? I thought I read that somewhere...

yes. im assuming itll be just like the one-way glass in snowbound.. the gold glass covering the roof of each base.. just applied in a more practical sense in assembly.

    now back to sandbox

I have the feeling that he was meaning something more like an over-sized crossroads. Maybe like an open street in between two "skyscrapers".

Change of topic, I was thinking what are the fence walls or barriers going to look like on Sandbox, or will there be any at all?

Ah good, that's much easier to find important photos. Anyway, I wish they did have glass, or maybe two of them, one with glass, one without.

    i just thought of something:

Remember how bungie doesnt like money-gitched maps?

What if they fixed the glitch here? on Sandbox?

They already said it's unlikely to run into the budget, as your moar likely to run into the item maximum first.

I wasnt speculating. im just expressing my hope that helpful glitches in our old maps wont be changed by the arrival of Sandbox.

I was wondering about this too. The "death barriers" on snowbound and sandtrap give the player a little time to get out of the danger zone after wandering in. But I can't see that kind of leeway being possible with the death ball. I mean, if your map called for a thin death barrier then you wouldn't want the player to have time to get out, a single second might be all he needs to just walk right through the thing. So the death ball must be an instant kill type deal.

I'm guessing responsibility to make the death ball work in-game is going to be placed upon the forger. If you want to prevent frustration then you need to treat the death ball as you would a cliff. If the player is going to be right up against the death ball then you should build some kind of railing to keep him from stumbling off the map (similar to how cliffs are treated on Construct and Epitaph), or give the player lots of empty space between the death ball and the rest of the map (similar to how cliffs are treated on Standoff and Avalanche).

Huh, the railing idea reminds me of last resort for some reason. Wierd. Anyone else going to have random kill balls hanging around as obstacles in there maps besides me? I'm going to have a vehicle battle map, make the jump, land next to PP spawn. Miss, blow up.

Current Halo 3 remakes: Blackout, Avalanche, Cold Storage, Last Resort

I wondered how many of the older maps could be re-imagined using sandbox...

Moderate Difficulty: Sanctuary, Turf, Coagulation/Blood Gulch, Beaver Creek, Warlock, Elongation, Derelict, Prisoner
Large Difficulty: (Headlong, Ascension, Ivory Tower, Rat Race, Boarding Action, Chiron TL 34)

The rest (and perhaps even some maps from these lists) seem to be impossible given the current information.

The deathball... man, now we can make death pits without wasting teleporters!
Sandbox is the best ****ing thing bungie has created (besides forge itself... duh)

Look in the distance, theres a guy on a platform sniping (obv sniping coz of the dead blue body nearby) These images are taken in theatre I beelive because a cap card would show info on etc, so it wont just be in forge mode you can see it it will be in forge gametype (Moniter not forge mode.

As I was saying with the sniper, hes pretty far out the sand dunes isnt he? o_O -B3NW

You know it could still be in Forge mode just with a bigger party. Like they started a forge session with like 10 people where some people are forging while others are playing

Is there going to be a big contest for Sandbox? I think that would be awesome to see how well people can forge on a new map, and they can show their skills.
