I am not in favor for Octoplex nor am I against it, Bungie has made there decisions BUT! I would also like to explain my reason for why these average maps are being put into MM. Now my reason is..is they Bungie doesn't want to discourage the beginner forging community by putting these Hands down AMAZING maps into MM because when the newer forgers see them they will be like...I'll never be able to create something like that and give up. Now when Bungie puts these average maps in the beginner community will be like Sweet map and want to learn how to advance their forging skills...but again it will discourage the advanced forging community and the competitive players of Halo 3. This is just my reasoning for why this map was put into MM...I was to thinking of submitting one of my maps..but I'm second guessing whether I should or not.
That could very well be part of it, but I doubt Shishka picked a lesser map for matchmaking in order to encourage new people to try forge. Octoplex was a very solid map, had good spawns, an excellent detailed post, and it was one of the first to be submitted.
Well then take a look at Anvil...Sure it had decent game play but the aesthetics were lacking and personally it had to much jumping and not enough routes. Thought bungie maybe not be picking amazing maps for the purpose to encourage forge or it might be for another totally different reason but I still believe HIGHLY that it has to do with some people being discouraged. Otherwise they would pick all the amazing maps because I KNOW those maps have perfect spawns and gameplay..
The joke is in your hands... I think we just have to wait and see what happens. What is the point of speculation? It never gets us anywhere.
Ok you do that, wait and see what happens-- and i'll go make it happen The people that are getting offended by Atlas are the ones fooling themselves into believing it's something more than it is. Again, Halo 3 is for casual players and Atlas is a group for casual level designers. For the casual person, Atlas is a success. For someone trying to beef up their portfolio, Atlas is a joke. I hope no one plans on applying to Bungie with a link to their file share. Current jokes:: Halo 3 forge Far cry 2 editor on xbox Google Sketch-up
I think we are forgetting what forge was intended to do. It was supposed to be to modify maps, not make completely new ones (until foundry was added) If you want a real map editor, play a PC game. And kon artist, are you and fritzter gonna give reviews to all the maps submitted into the forge like a pro contest. I would just like to know, not trying to rush you because I know your busy.
Yeah, indulging the obsessive fringe minority and alienating the casual majority is always a bad business model. In fact most businesses in the entertainment industry seem to harbor a kind of loathing towards their most obsessive fans. So Ocotplex was probably chosen because it looks clean, the gameplay fundamentals are sound, and it doesn't display any level of fanaticism. But that seems odd to me because what casual player is even aware of Atlas? And what casual forger would be willing to put in the time to test a map? And to understand the spawn placement, the weapon placement, weapon respawns, and map breakability that is required for a map to even function properly in matchmaking you need a pretty in depth understanding of forge. Even if you go in as a forge nub you either have to force yourself to become a pro or just give up entirely. The whole situation is very confusing. This is why I'm glad I invested in Aesthetic maps, ain't no Bungie made groups that are gonna raise my hopes and then crush my dreams.
You're all saying that atlas/halo is for casual gamers so they chose a casual map... SO WHAT?! Why would you not choose what is widely considered to be the best map? that's like if you were forming a baseball team and you had a choice between a pro or a casual player who wasn't necessarily any good at all... who would you choose? Of course you would choose a pro, not just because he is better but because he could teach other players on your team how to play better, he would attract positive attention from the wider community and he would generally improve the team... Obviously the casual player wouldn't have a negative impact, but he wouldn't have as strong of an impact as a pro... as for you making it over the length of a year, I seem to remember somewhere reading that you made it in a day with a party while you were just messing about... but I can't remember where I read that...
Not everyone, I'm saying it functions like bungie favorites does. PS: Are we still allowed to submit maps to ATLAS? Also, I should make a post there with a link to this thread. That would be interesting. EDIT: The map was chosen because it was symmetrical so the sides are even for multi flag. I think thats why some of the other well made maps weren't chosen as well.
ok lets make this even more simple Click here if your a casual level designer Click here if your looking to start making a living as a level designer
That's exactly what I'm trying to point out. Obviously I failed somewhere along the lines, eh. Well, here's my observations based off of Octoplex. Compared to the majority of 'our' maps, such as Terminal, Kentucky Tango, and Troika, the map by Octodeath is relatively 'moderate'. There aren't any things that 'destroy' the original geometry of Foundry like there are in other maps. Is this maybe what they're looking for? I don't know. Because I'm not Bungie. Until then, we'll just have to keep making maps until we can find out which one suits their taste. I'm not really going to buy into the 'Bungie hates FH's maps' theory, because it really, really, really doesn't make any sense. I know the whole getup where most 'real' players of H3 don't like playing custom maps, but they know that soon, the only people who will be staying with Halo will be the tinkerers and purists. Purists want to stick to the original maps, and tinkerers will want to play on their on maps. So they're trying to strike a somewhat happy medium, I'd reason.
While your analogy makes sense, you are kinda looking at this the wrong way. It's not about the creation of maps, but the playability of it. Obvious H3 has gone casual, the AR is enough reason to prove that. So honestly, which map is bungie going to choose? The map that promotes tactics, control and BR battles, or the map that promotes AR spray, power weapon whoring, and nubkills. Obviously the one going to be more satisfying to the general player. Nubkills. Their own maps are set up like this, their own playstyles are like this. Halo3 is casual. Only MLG is competitive anymore.. You can't take the players out of their elements. And hell, we might believe our best maps play amazing, but maybe they don't play the way bungie intends. Bungie wants maps to play for nubs. Why do you think guardian has a shitty weapon setup? So when it's AR starts, nubs have a chance. This is a 360 though, we don't have the capabillities of a PC editor. Halo is still one of the best games for level design. I haven't played another game where the map mattered so much (maybe gears). Maybe I just haven't played enough CS, but I didn't find the maps a big deal, expect for a few areas. UT3? I've barely noticed, theres a ton of weapon spawns and the gameplay is too fast paced for the level to matter. Modern day FPS' like CoD use maps straight out of campaign as the maps don't even matter, god you could play in a square room with a bit of cover. Again, casual is the majority of halo and bungie is always trying to please the majority. It's what sells. This is business period.
Ehem Might I point out Shipment? A tiny map with some cover and lots of shooting. --- I think we shouldn't put down Octo's map without playing it. Many people seem to have their own differing opinions on the map and ATLAS as a whole. First off, I don't have time to address all the people, so just download and play it then judge it. Secondly, Bungie can do what they want. Appreciate the fact they gave us the option to submit our maps. It's not a joke that they're not fully monitoring it. It's the fact that they are a fully functioning company with more priorities than just custom content.
While this statement is true, it is a bad thing to say. We all like Halo and that is why we make maps for it. If we all loved Far Cry 2, we'd all be making maps for that instead. The map making system on that game is far more advanced than Halo's forge, yet we are all still here. Some of the more harcore community map makers are making modded content for other games and usually they pick the games they play the most to make maps for. Thats just the way it goes. Forge was designed to edit maps, then foundry came along where we can actually make maps. So why would Bungie not want maps that were actually made with real geometry to it, and use a map that is more foundry that has been edited? I hope that makes sense, it's the best way I can describe it. I just truely believe Octoplex is not the map we should want/have to represent the Forging community. If the bolded statement is true, why does ATLAS even exist? To get our hopes up, and then shoot them out of the sky? Or was it created to get good/worthy user created content into matchmaking? It seams like the first idea is what has happened here.
lol, baby, this map looks pretty good, interlocking is not required to have a good map, but makes it easier to have one, and having a GREAT map without interlocking, makes it even better. personally, this map looks great, quit crying that your map didnt make it.
Yeah your statement made sense. And atlas probably functions how bungie favorites functions. Bungie favorites shows what you can do in the game. ATLAS shows you have a chance to get a map in matchmaking. Thats my view on it.
No. You didn't understand my post so now I have to spell it out for you. They're a company with their own priorities and responsibilities. They made it to the small forging community it's own chance. As to your "bolded statement part". That sentence was part of a whole thought. I wanted to not look like an idiot so I added periods in the appropriate areas. A quote is a quote, you can't disregard certain information provided and pick focus on others. You end up missing the entire point of a post. This can make you look overly arrogant and in some cases immature. Though it's probably too late for you to take that into consideration.
QFT I think whole thread was just his jealousy of a map he didn't like (and wasn't his) getting in Match Making.
