I am reaaally diggin' this, you should finish it. I'm guessin' you rendered all that swirly shiz yourself, care to let me know how you did it? I'd like to see more LPs that you've done.
3d studio max, had fun with shapes, tex maps etc, brought it all into photoshop, few touch ups here and there, couple of gradient maps later and you have that effect on the swirls. try to get your hands on either 3dsm, maya or c4d. read up on some basic tutorials, the time you spend with it will pay out greatly in the end, just soldier on through it, it'll drive you mad, though. here's something i made for a friend, she ended up not liking it ;_;

Apparently 3D studio max doesn't work for mac G5 computers so I did a search for Maya and found Autodesk maya, is that it? It's free.
Damn it was only a 30 day trial.. Eh, I doubt my frail old computer could handle a beefy 3D program like that... I'll have to live without it for now. Great stuff Convulse, keep it coming.
that's true it's free, too. hard as a ***** to learn, though. also, whisper, i can't really say, im more familiar with 3dsm, but maya is just as flexible, both are industry standards, if you want to be superXhArdCoReeEXXx, learn both?
